During our Gamescom preview, I asked if Valheim 1.0 means we'll see a sequel further down the line, and if not, what the future holds.
The fabled Valheim 1.0 release is finally here. Yes, this is the real life; no, it isn't just fantasy. After five years of development, the survival game is finally leaving early access, bringing you a brand new biome in the Deep North, alongside two new dungeons, its biggest enemy yet, rideable moose, and mineable trolls. Speaking to me at Gamescom 2026, however, Art Lead and Creative Director, Robin 'Grimmcore' Eyre, and Producer Andreas 'Lumaaah' Tomasson confirmed that Valheim 1.0 does have an ending, with a goosebump-inducing cinematic to boot. It begs the question: what's next? Is it Valheim 2? Or is it something else?
Whatever it is, I can confirm it isn't Valheim 2. "I think it was about a year ago [that] I started asking the community on social platforms and the Discord [about a Valheim sequel]," Eyre recalls. "The consensus was that Valheim 2 could be cool, but people really, really want more content for Valheim.
"I think they want more miles; I think they want more progression forward. That's what we want to lean into more as well as just giving more."
He goes on to mention myriad elements that have been added to the game over time, like Trinkets and Adrenaline. "We never thought we were going to make the combat update, but that came out of necessity for the community. That's not something we ever planned at all," he recalls, but once again, it's what the players wanted. While he doesn't mention anything specific, it's clear that the team will still be working on Valheim post-1.0, and that it has no plans to slow down.
We have seen some side projects from several members of the Iron Gate team, including Eyre and Tommason's co-op horror thriller, Begraved, as well as Lead Engineer and Designer Jonathan Smårs' Starpath, a starship crafter that lets you build your own cruiser and float around in space. We may see the team continue to spin up adjacent titles, or maybe we'll see them develop new games in the Valheim universe (Valiverse?). Either way, I'm excited to see what comes next. If it's a Netflix show, we'll all be happy.
