Koei Tecmo is bringing back one of the classic pillars of the Musou format with Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered. The new edition of the game, which was originally released as Shin Sangoku Musou 2 in Japan, tries to stick close to its origins while providing a significant revamp to its visuals and few additions to the gameplay.
Mixing up elements from the original Dynasty Warriors 3 and its alternative version/standalone expansion Xtreme Legends, Complete Edition Remastered lets players experience multiple battles adapted from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms. There are over forty different characters to choose from, including the protagonist from Dynasty Warriors: Origins, but the list starts much smaller at nine individuals and the player has to unlock others by reaching specific conditions during gameplay.
As one of the action games in the Musou action format, players will have to go around battlefields with many enemies, destroying their hordes while taking into account the battle condition and objectives. Simply moving around without an aim is often not enough to win, as defeating enemy officers and moving the battlefield to be more favorable to your group is important.
While defeating the small fry may at most provide immediate benefits, like items that restore health/musou gauge or improve stats temporarily, striking a decisive blow against squad leaders often rewards players with permanent improvements or weapons. Making good use of the mini-map to move around, evaluating enemy positions to crush the leader closest to you before moving on to the next one, for example, is one possible strategy to leverage morale for the other fighters at your side.
One of the first choices in the game is whether to use the old controls from the original release or the new ones. The original release came in 2001 and these controls may feel awkward to new players, which is why they opted to offer a new scheme as default and also add a few elements.
After that, it's possible to enjoy the game's multiple modes, which include the storyline-evolving Musou, Free Mode (replaying any battle with any unlocked character), and a wide variety of objectives in Challenge mode (like running to get as fast as possible to the goal or defeating as many enemies as possible before dying). There is also offline multiplayer to enjoy the game with a friend, whether in co-op or versus.
Compared to the original game, Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition Remastered has new defensive methods. Namely, it’s possible to dodge and use perfect guards and the best timing opens up enemies for counterattacks. Understanding the timing of when to perform a combo and when to wait just a little to counter is a major aspect in this action experience.
Another big addition is how weapons work now, following a structure similar to other titles in the series. New weapons can be fused in order to create a stronger one with the abilities of the others. This crafting system lets players have much more control over their build, passing down specific buffs to weapons that are naturally stronger when you take into account the game's base tiers.
