Edgar Markov Is Back In MTG Reality Fracture, But His Echoverse Card Is Bad

With preview season for Magic: The Gathering's new Reality Fracture set almost complete, we're not letting the potential product delays get us down, and instead we're taking a closer look at some of the new Echoverse versions of popular Magic characters. One in particular that piqued our interest is Edgar, Moonlit Sovereign. This is part of the Echoed Pair with Edgar, Ancient Bloodlord, and it's great to see the return of the iconic Vampire Commander, even if neither of the cards comes close to the power of the Commander 2017 iteration.

In fact, if we're being honest, Wolf Markov is a pretty terrible Commander in Reality Fracture, but that's not stopping players from wanting to challenge themselves to build a deck around him, mostly because the card itself has some very cool artwork.

Edgar, Moonlit Sovereign is an uncommon five-mana (2G, 3C) 4/4 Werewolf Noble with Flash, who gains two +1/+1 counters if, on your end step, you haven't cast a spell during your turn. You can also pay five mana (1G, 4C) to put a +1/+1counter on each creature you control that already has a +1/+1 counter on it.

Given that this Edgar is a mono-green Commander in Reality Fracture, it's not entirely surprising to see him heavily lean into +1/+1 counters as a mechanic, but the idea that your goal is to cast all your spells outside of your turn is what brings this card down.

There are plenty of exciting complementary cards you can put in a deck led by Edgar, like Ozolith and Hardened Scales to ramp up the +1/+1 counter production, but ultimately, you'll need to find ways to also give all of your creatures Flash and rely on instant-speed spells to prevent yourself from negating Edgar's ability over and over again.

Naturally, you can aim to set up your board through your first few turns before then casting Edgar right before your turn begins, but opponents will see this coming a mile off and likely have an answer in hand. Also, at five mana, he's an expensive Commander to try and build around, even with the ramp ability of a mono-green deck.

Hilariously, there are already players openly calling out how poor this card is as a Commander, but committing to trying to build a deck around it anyway, as the artwork is extremely cool.

While it's clear that Edgar, Moonlit Sovereign isn't going to come anywhere close to the OG Edgar Markov Commander in terms of popularity, there is still a good utility card that can be a part of decks using green mana. My Quandrix X-spell deck could certainly use a creature like Edgar, who can dish out +1/+1 counters to creatures that already have them, especially when this helps ramp up Zimone, Infinite Analyst, and the many base 0/0 X-spell creatures I already have in this deck.
