Capcom's own Resident Evil remake initiative is proving so successful that it will one day run out of mainline games to actually modernise, but the developer has been planning for that possibility all along.
With two "tracks", as producer Jun Takeuchi puts it, through the Resident Evil series — the remakes and the brand new titles — Capcom has been anticipating a "crossover" between the tracks. "Someday, the remake series will catch up with the era of the numbered titles, and we are already thinking about what we will do when that happens," he then continued.
Takeuchi says the company has been preparing for the crossover since Resident Evil Village, where it name-dropped Umbrella and Spencer, and then brought back Raccoon City in Resident Evil Requiem. This was all in preparation for that "crossover", according to the producer.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was when the firm agreed on this approach and setup, and the more recent games have included links to the older entries on purpose, in anticipation of when the timelines connect. "At first, we included these elements with the sense that they were fan service, but users were far more delighted by them than we had imagined, and they even began analysing the thoughts that the development team had privately kept to itself."
"So, as a series, we decided to respond to users’ expectations and pushed this setup further in Village and Requiem."
