Goku's been transforming since the first saga in Dragon Ball, with every canon series from Akira Toriyama introducing more and more forms. Kaioken was the first form that Goku unlocked in Dragon Ball Z, but it only took one story arc before it was permanently replaced with Super Saiyan. It took until the Dragon Ball Super anime in the 2010s for Kaioken to be brought back into the canon storyline, albeit this time as Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken.
Due to the intense physical strain it puts on his body, Goku only uses Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken in Dragon Ball Super a few times. In the manga, he doesn't even use the transformation until the Tournament of Power, essentially only using it once. The transformation has been missing for years now, but Dragon Ball is officially bringing Super Saian Blue Kaioken Goku back for one of the best tournament fights in the series.
In Dragon Ball Super, Goku first used Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken against Hit during the Tournament of Destroyers in the Universe 6 Saga. When Goku finds himself outclassed by Hit's raw power and ability to manipulate time, Goku stacks Kaioken on top of Super Saiyan Blue, pushing his body to the brink of permanent damage in order to receive an enormous power boost which allows Goku to fully overpower Hit and counter his Time Skip.
Goku's fight with Hit was already one of the best battles exclusive to the Dragon Ball Super anime, but there was plenty of room for improvement. Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is going to take a great fight and make it legitimately amazing with new animation, art direction, and extra moments. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken looks visually gorgeous with the remake's lighting and color palette. Goku is downright striking as he launches his way at Hit – it's great to see Kaioken get the quality it deserves for its big comeback.
Goku originally learned the Kaioken while training with King Kai in the Other World for the battle against the Saiyans at the start of Dragon Ball Z. Unlike later forms, there was an element of real strategy and risk that came with using Kaioken. Kaioken put immense strain on Goku's body, slowly breaking his body while draining his Ki at a rapid pace. One wrong move with Kaioken could result in death for Goku, something that very nearly happens while fighting Vegeta in DBZ.
The fact Goku has to be smart with his Kaioken usage leads to him using the transformation in creative ways, like remaining in base as much as possible while only briefly triggering Kaioken to attack. Visually, the red aura around Goku looks fantastic – it's one of the best-designed red forms in Dragon Ball. Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken looked garish in Dragon Ball Super 1, but Dragon Ball Super: Beerus' redesign is amazing, swapping the bright cyan hair with a dulled purple that takes a backseat to Goku's red Ki and blue aura. It's a fantastic visual change.
Interestingly, the presence of Super Saiyan Blue Kaioken Goku in Dragon Ball Super: Beerus confirms that the anime version of the Tournament of Destroyers is actually closer to being series canon than the manga. In the manga, Goku simply uses Super Saiyan Blue to overcome Hit's Time Skip. This is in-line with the original manga's power scaling, but leads to a much duller fight. Notably, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is being marketed as the true version of the series' story arcs, based on Toriyama's original notes and outlines for each saga.
