Vegeta may be Goku's greatest rival, but Frieza will always be his greatest enemy. Goku and Frieza met for the first time on Namek in Dragon Ball Z, and the two have hated each other ever since. While Frieza was surpassed by the end of DBZ, Dragon Ball Super brought him back, gave him a power boost, and made him a character worthy enough to rival a God like Goku.
The last time Goku and Frieza fought was in 2017, during the first half of Dragon Ball Super's Universe Survival Saga when Goku was still recruiting Universe 7's team for the Tournament of Power. Nearly a full decade since their last battle, Goku and Frieza are stepping into the arena for a rewatch that's going to go down in Dragon Ball history – and it's going to happen before the end of 2026.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is officially remaking Battle of Gods, Resurrection F, and the Universe 6 Saga this Fall. Realistically, the anime will get to Goku and Frieza's final battle from Resurrection F before the end of the year. The original version of Goku and Frieza's second battle was stiff and lifeless, bogged down by awkward CG models. The anime version was downright abysmal thanks to horribly low quality animation, terrible pacing, and embarrassing storyboarding.
The recent Super Surge trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Beerus shows off multiple clips of Goku's final showdown with Frieza from Resurrection F, and it all looks beautiful. Every frame has been remade – even the worst offenders – into something that looks genuinely fantastic. The lighting and modeling make for gorgeous shots, while the action and movement are far more fluid than anything from Dragon Ball Super 1.
Dragon Ball Super: Beerus is going to take one of the worst fights in the franchise and turn it into one of the best. Watching Super Saiyan Blue Goku VS Golden Frieza with the action, music, and direction it actually deserves is going to make the rematch hit harder. Doubly so, since context from future arcs lets us know that this is merely the first of many encounters Goku will have with Frieza in Dragon Ball Super, giving the remake an opportunity to foreshadow Black Frieza for Dragon Ball Super 2.
Based on the trailer alone, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus' remake of Resurrection F will use the anime version as its foundation, while adding in new scenes and moments. There is no version of Resurrection F or the Golden Frieza Saga where Goku turns Super Saiyan God against him. The Super Surge trailer, however, shows Goku powering up to Super Saiyan God in-between his base form battle and Super Saiyan Blue fight with Frieza.
It's unclear if Goku is merely showing off Super Saiyan God while transitioning immediately into Super Saiyan Blue, but one of Goku's main tactics in the Dragon Ball Super manga is using his various Super Saiyan and God forms as a ladder to test out his opponents. It's also already been confirmed that Dragon Ball Super: Beerus will be adding new scenes based on Akira Toriyama's original outline and scripts, so the remake could very well add a new battle specifically between Super Saiyan God Goku and Golden Frieza.
