Superhero games that were once in development have been dropping like flies lately, sometimes before we’ve ever even been shown anything from them. Most assumed that would be the fate of EA’s Iron Man, a game being developed by Motive. Turns out Iron Man is alive and well, or at least that’s what a leaked trailer has heavily implied.
The trailer, which is all we’ve seen of the game outside of a title card announcing it exists in 2022, was shared on the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit. It was quickly taken down, potentially because there are identifiers on-screen that might make whoever leaked it easy to track down. This is the internet, though, and the trailer has already been shared by others elsewhere.
A notification pops up midway through the trailer that seemingly confirms the leaker is a freshman, along with the university they attend, so not exactly the hardest breadcrumb trail for EA’s lawyers to follow.
The trailer is a long one too. More than two and a half minutes from the game that combines cinematic story beats with actual gameplay. That gameplay includes how it’s going to look and feel to fly around what appears to be New York City as Iron Man. It’s also our first look at the game’s take on Tony Stark, both in and out of his armor.
The trailer shows Stark suiting up a few times, and even though it kicks off with the Avenger wearing his iconic red and gold suit, towards the end we’re shown Stark working on other suits, with some alternate choices teased in the background while he tinkers with one on a mannequin. An implication that not only will we have multiple suits to choose from à la Insomniac’s Spider-Man games, but perhaps that we’ll be able to tweak and customize them.
The trailer has no sound and parts are unfinished, which makes it even more impressive that the charisma you get from a stereotypical Tony Stark still comes across. Likely inspired by Robert Downey Jr’s take on the hero, there are a lot of scenes in the trailer that almost look like they’ve been pulled directly from the MCU. The spinning laser move Iron Man uses to take out a bunch of mechs, and catching a missile just so he can throw it back where it came from. I've definitely seen Iron Man do both of those things on the big screen.
We’re also given a first look at some of the villains Iron Man will be faced with in this game. It’s difficult to determine who they are exactly due to the low quality, although one looks like a slimmed-down Iron Monger. Also similar to the first Insomniac Spidey game, I’d bet there will be more than one recognizable big bad Stark has tasked with taking down.
The mechs shown throughout don’t give much away either since they’re pretty generic. We are shown a sequence where Iron Man is fighting them on a helicarrier, though. Something else fans of the MCU will have instantly recognized, and although when you see helicarrier, you think Avengers, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to meet more of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in this game.
