Isekai is one of the most popular genres in anime, with new series airing every single anime season, year after year. Marking the end of the 2026 summer broadcast season in Japan, TVS REGZA conducted a survey for their Anime Data Awards that revealed an interesting detail about the Isekai genre: its biggest fans are almost entirely older men.
While the Isekai genre is popular with fans of all ages, men in their 30s and up overwhelmingly watch Isekai anime over both new series and more than other demographics of viewers. This should come as no surprise, considering several Isekai anime star older men who died, are reincarnated into teenagers, and get to live out epic power fantasies where all their dreams come true (often with a harem twist).
TVS REGZA's survey for the Anime Data Awards broke demographics down into the following categories: Teens aged 13-19, Men aged 20-34, Men aged 35-49, Men aged 50-64, Women aged 20-34, Women aged 35-49, and Women aged 50-64. Compared to other five demographics, Men 35-49 and Men 50-64 watched Isekai anime far more than anyone else. Although several Isekai anime landed in the Top 10 for all seven, men from 35 to 64 almost only watched Isekai.
In fact, out of the 12 series listed by the Anime Data Awards for Men 50-64, only one wasn't an Isekai series. Every other anime watched by men in the older age bracket was from the Isekai genre. Interestingly, Men 20-34 have the least affinity for the Isekai genre, whereas women can go either way, with older women slightly more partial to Isekai anime than their younger counterparts. Even with its least watched demographics, however, the Isekai genre has a clear stronghold on fans.

The best and most popular Isekai anime are almost all power fantasies starring nearly invincible young men who get everything they could ever want in the end (with exceptions here and there, of course). It's odd, but perhaps unsurprising given the nature of fandom culture, that a genre primarily marketed towards, and made for, children is primarily consumed by an older male otaku audience. Series like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime and Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation remain wildly popular Isekai anime with older fans.
