Valheim thrusts players into the boots of a Viking warrior on a quest to defeat a big bunch of bad guys threatening the existence of the Norse afterlife. If you're a survival-crafting fan, then you should already have a general idea of what you need to do here, but Valheim does things a little differently compared to other games in the genre. If you're a completely new player, or if you want a refresher on all the things you need to do to start this game on the right foot, here's a little compendium containing everything you need to know.
Apart from building bases and getting progressively better equipment, your ultimate goal in Valheim is to slay eight bosses, one in each non-ocean biome. When you first land on your procedurally generated map, you'll find a bunch of stone steles forming a circle — each stele represents a boss, and once you beat them, you can mount their heads here and claim a part of their power for yourself.
Each boss is significantly stronger than the last, but each biome also contains new resources that will make you even more powerful. Biomes also tend to require specialized equipment, which means you'll need to play through the game one biome at a time in this order:
While exploring each biome, you may run across a Vegvisir, which is a small stone tablet with a glowing inscription on it. Interact with the Vegvisir, and you'll reveal the location of your current biome's boss on the world map.
The first thing you'll want to do is pick up some wood and stone (preferably Flint from riverbanks), then build a basic set of tools and a Workbench. You can build almost anywhere in Valheim, but you can only do so within the buildable vicinity of a Workbench.
You need a hammer if you want to place building pieces and crafting stations. Also, most crafting stations will only work if they're surrounded by walls and covered by a roof, though you can easily make small sheds to account for this.
Simple items can be crafted in your inventory, while the majority of recipes can only be made by using the right crafting station. Thankfully, the process itself is as simple as picking the stuff you want to make from a list and hitting the Craft button. You'll need to have the right materials in your inventory in order to craft items and buildings.
Some recipes will be locked behind higher-level crafting stations, and to get these, you'll need to build and place certain Improvement buildings near the station you want to upgrade. For example, to upgrade a basic Workbench, you'll need to place one of the following Improvements near it:
