You might've noticed a wave of uninspired and vibecoded slop bleeding out across social media over the last few days, awkwardly slamming together Elden Ring and Minecraft in viral clips. New advancements in Claude have allowed anyone, regardless of their background, to prompt elaborate mods, decomps, and recomps, littering the scene with amateurish spaghetti code. Thankfully, X user FunkyLion has a solution.
They've created an in-depth document that exclusively lists human-made decomps and recomps. "Around the early 2020s, we witnessed a decompilation that changed everything," they explained. "The ability to play your classic games NATIVELY on your PC with mods at uncapped FPS? It's a dream come true! [...] Now we're in the mid-2020s, and AI has gotten a hold of everything, with people that have little to NO programming experience porting games completely untested, leading to a wave of buggy AI ports of games that are completely broken. And the sad part is, they overshadow the quality work of decomps/recomps done by actual people. That's gonna change!"
I won't repeat the list verbatim here (you can check it on Backloggd out by clicking this link), but here are some of the highlights:
FunkyLion plans to monitor "every decomp/recomp done by actual people" by working directly with the programmers and developers behind these projects, ensuring the document remains accurate and up to date. They also encourage readers to reach out via X if any project on the list turns out to be vibecoded, so it can be removed.
As FunkyLion explains, one of the biggest benefits of recomps and decomps is that they open the floodgates for modding, making it far easier to experiment with games that were previously locked to consoles. But when those projects are vibecoded, that benefit quickly disappears. Generated code often lacks a coherent architecture and fails to preserve the game's original structure, making it significantly harder to mod as developers are left to untangle a vibecoded mess just to figure out how the thing works.
It's unfortunate that lists like this are even required, but with AI growing more and more advanced, these kinds of recomps, decomps, and mods are only going to become more commonplace. For those who actually want to preserve the original games and tinker with them, that's a problem.
