I’m quite intrigued by the newly announced Signal Veil, a third-person survival horror game with a 90s anime aesthetic.
Unlike any other title in the genre I can think of, this has a cel-shaded look that’s reminiscent of, say, Dreamcast-era games. It’s really quite unique from that perspective.
Developed by a Chilean studio named Time Hunters, the title has been picked up by Tokyo-based outfit Serafini Productions.
Among its influences, the team lists obvious titles like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, but also modern anime sensations like Jujutsu Kaisen, which is cool.
Here’s the plot overview, via the press release:
“In Signal Veil, players take on the role of Aki Mizuno, a teenage girl whose mother vanishes without a trace, leaving behind one final gift: an old cellphone that reacts to spirits no one else can see. Inside the seemingly ordinary halls of Nishikawa High School, a series of disappearances begins to unfold. Through tense exploration, ritual-like encounters and an increasingly fragile mind, Aki must uncover a past buried under false memories and silence.”
While the game will focus on a classic, PS1-era fixed camera perspective, it’ll also incorporate aspects from Fatal Frame, as you use a flip-phone to solve puzzles and even stun enemies.
There’s no release window attached to this just yet, so I suspect it’s still some time away – although you can wishlist now on the PS Store if you want to.
