It’s an open secret that PlayStation doesn’t plan to put its exclusive single-player games on PC anymore. Now the studio has given its clearest indicator yet that it has left PC ports behind, for the most part, via its latest ad flaunting games that are “only on PS5”.
The new ad reminds the world that upcoming PS5 exclusives Wolverine and God of War Laufey won’t just be available on PS5 alone when they launch - it will remain that way for a very long time, potentially forever. However, the ad also confirms assumptions that this new anti-PC PlayStation edict was put in place sometime between the releases of Ghost of Yotei and Saros.
That’s because both of those more recent PlayStation exclusives have also made it into the ad, confirming that, unless there’s a big pivot in PlayStation’s new strategy, you will need a PS5 if you ever want to play them. That’s until the next generation of PlayStation consoles, when they inevitably get remasters or complete editions, at which point they’ll be able to play on PS6.
The more surprising inclusions in the new ad are Gran Turismo 7 and Astro Bot, two titles that are neither upcoming releases nor new games that launched within the last 12 months. GT7 the less surprising of the two, perhaps, as after more than four years, you’d have thought if the racing game was ever going to be ported to PC, it would have happened a while ago.
Astro Bot might be the only one that PC players are somewhat surprised by. More than two years on, some might have believed that there was an outside chance the modern-day PlayStation mascot’s latest platformer might have made it in under the PC port wire as we approach its second birthday. Seemingly not, and there is no ambiguity in this new ad either.
PlayStation doesn’t even wait for you to start watching the ad before letting you know you can’t play these exclusives anywhere else - the ad itself is titled “Only On PS5” on YouTube. It keeps a “PlayStation 5 Exclusive” watermark in the top corner, and then proceeds to inform viewers that “[Insert Game Name Here] Happens On PS5” in the back half of the new commercial.
There was a hope that PlayStation might back off of its move away from PC, even if only slightly, after Insomniac’s Spider-Man games experienced a serious sales spike on the platform a few weeks ago. Brand New Day’s release brought in thousands of new players, resulting in Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2 skyrocketing up the Steam charts. If that did change anything behind the scenes, it will likely just be that Spidey games are the PS5 exception to the PC rule.
