Jujutsu Kaisen, by Gege Akutami, released its final chapter in 2024 as Sukuna's fall in Shinjuku made for a grand ending. Despite Jujutsu Kaisen giving a flashy end to its main villain, quite a lot of the characters weren't fleshed out fully. Luckily for dedicated fans of the series, this wasn't the true end of the story. Gege Akutami, with the help of Yuji Iwasaki, went on to return to Jujutsu Kaisen once more in 2025, bringing us Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, a sequel set 68 years after the fall of Sukuna, following new main characters and a new captivating plot.
Because of the timeskip between the original Jujutsu Kaisen and Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, quite a few main characters ended up dying, and that also includes Megumi Fushiguro, who was confirmed dead in Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo Chapter 25. While sad, this prompted Gege Akutami to come up with a new replacement for him, and he's done just that with Yuka Okkotsu, Yuta and Maki's granddaughter. Yuka is the new user of the Ten Shadows Technique, and a perfect replacement for Megumi in more ways than one.
Megumi Fushiguro was one of the major characters from the original Jujutsu Kaisen series. He made his first appearance in the very first chapter of Jujutsu Kaisen, released on March 5, 2018, in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #14. Immediately upon his introduction, we knew that Megumi had an interesting flair about him. It was revealed in the very first chapter of the series that he held within him one of the most overpowered Cursed Techniques of the story. Megumi Fushiguro's power is the Ten Shadows Technique, and it is a coveted ability of the Zenin Clan, known to potentially be on the same scale as Gojo's Limitless. In the original Jujutsu Kaisen story, Megumi was never seen reaching his full potential with the Ten Shadows Technique, and in the Modulo sequel, he is, sadly, no more, as confirmed by the dialogue between Yuji and Nobara.
In Megumi’s stead, we have a new master of the Ten Shadows Technique in Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo, who inherited it directly after him. Among the new cast of main characters, we have Yuka Okkotsu, the granddaughter of Yuta and Maki, and she was first revealed to us during Jujutsu Kaisen's one-shot from December 2024 in the final volume. Yuka Okkotsu was revealed in Jujutsu Kaisen: Modulo chapter 16 to hold the same power as Megumi, that being the Ten Shadows Technique. She inherited this ability through her grandmother's Zenin blood. This makes Yuka the second officially confirmed and named character to hold this Cursed Technique.
Character-wise, Yuka and Megumi are definitely very distinct, but they both hold a very important role in their respective stories and share some traits nevertheless. Yuka, just like Megumi, is a main character, and her bond with her sibling, just like Megumi's, is what pushes her forward. Yuka is ready to use the Ten Shadow Technique to its full extent, even if it means harming herself in the same way as Megumi Fushiguro in the original Jujutsu Kaisen series.
Yuka and Megumi are the only two confirmed Ten Shadow Technique users who were born with it. While they both possess the same technique, we have seen a wildly different utilization from each of them. Megumi Fushiguro, throughout his involvement in the original Jujutsu Kaisen series, especially made use of the summoning of Shikigami through the Ten Shadows. Megumi was thus seen able to summon a wide array of creatures from his shadow, such as Divine Dogs or a Great Serpent. In Jujutsu Kaisen Chapter 58, which was released on May 13, 2019, in WSJ Issue #24, he was even able to manifest a half-baked Domain Expansion known as the Chimera Shadow Garden. We've never seen Megumi complete this domain, but this feat was still very impressive.
Meanwhile, Yuka Okkotsu lives in a very different era from Megumi. In the original Jujutsu Kaisen series, Megumi's body was taken over by Sukuna. Because of that, the Ten Shadows Technique has gotten negative connotations, and its usual usage has become quite a controversy, so much so that the Gojo Clan has banned the summoning of the Shikigami. Because of this new rule, Yuka's fighting style had to adapt. Instead of summoning Shikigami, she relies on manifesting the ability of the Shikigami through her attacks, which leads to powers such as Savage Jaw Strike or Biting Twist. This is an application of a very powerful Shikigami called Tiger Funeral. Using Shikigami powers without summoning them is something that we've never seen Megumi himself do, although Sukuna has used similar abilities while in possession of his body.
Unlike Megumi, Yuka has never been seen using a Domain Expansion. Both of them can summon Mahoraga, but neither of them has been shown to be able to tame it. The only person ever seen taming Mahoraga was Sukuna, which could imply that Megumi gained access to him through Sukuna's own achievement, but that has never been confirmed by Gege Akutami. Otherwise, they're both talented users with their own strengths and weaknesses, with neither having reached their full potential.
