With the focus on story that you find in many RPGs and other modern games, it's only natural that you come across characters who meet a fate they didn't deserve purely because they got unlucky. The main characters go through their own ordeals, and that gets the spotlight, but there are games where you find side characters and can't help feeling like their situations are somehow even worse than the main character's.
I understand that side characters are often used as tools for the narrative or emotional investment, but when you stop and think about some of them, it's difficult not to feel bad for what they go through.
You might play as Sarah during the beginning of The Last of Us, but she's definitely stuck in side character territory considering she doesn't live past the first half hour. This sets up the reason behind Joel's behavior towards Ellie, but it's tragic for Sarah.
After staying up late to give her dad a watch for his birthday that she saved up to buy, Sarah wakes up in the middle of the night to chaos as the infection breaks out. In a short span of time, she breaks her leg in a car crash, then gets shot to death when Joel tries to carry her to safety.
When Groose is on the screen in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, your first thought is likely that he exists to be a minor inconvenience for Link and to provide a bit of comedy. He maintains a baseline level of ridiculousness throughout the game, which makes it easy to overlook his contributions.
Groose helps more than you might expect during the game, but he doesn't get a lot out of it. However, because he actually cares about Zelda, he ends up showing that he can be selfless when it matters. Hopefully he lives decently after helping save what would be Hyrule.
The nature of Silent Hill as a town shifts as much as the environment of the town does when it flips from normal to nightmare. In the first game, Alessa is the one whose psychological state controls the nightmare world. Alessa’s greatest sin was being born into a cult.
