Capcom has just offered an unusually detailed glimpse at what goes on behind the scenes of game development, revealing how the technology powering some of its biggest titles is preparing for a very different future – which is particularly fascinating if you enjoy seeing how games are actually made.

During the company's CAPCOM Open Conference RE:2026 (thanks, Gamebiz!), programmer Satoshi Ishida presented the next phase of RE ENGINE and introduced REX, an ambitious project designed to evolve the engine without completely replacing the technology Capcom has relied on for years.

RE ENGINE has quietly become the technological backbone of Capcom's games. Originally developed in 2014 and first used commercially with Resident Evil 7 in 2017, the engine has since powered more than 27 of the company's titles. However, after more than eight years of continuous development, Capcom has encountered several challenges that can no longer be solved simply by adding more features.

And the biggest one is pretty straightforward: modern games have become massive. More detailed worlds require dramatically larger amounts of data, while increasingly complex development tools can turn simple changes into lengthy waiting periods. More than 2,000 Capcom developers now use RE ENGINE, including teams across different countries and with different technical backgrounds. Then there is the rapidly evolving technology that is changing virtually every part of the industry: AI.

So, rather than abandoning RE ENGINE and starting from scratch, they are taking a more gradual approach with REX. The project brings together a collection of new technologies designed to improve everything from data processing and development tools to runtime performance and automated testing.

One of the key components is RE:Dox, which aims to create a common way of handling different types of game data. By simplifying how information is processed internally, Capcom says the technology can significantly improve loading and editing speeds.
