Last week, Playground Games unveiled a lengthy 18-minute gameplay deep dive for the upcoming Fable game, featuring a 'new' protagonist.
New is in quotation marks because the game doesn't have a set protagonist like The Witcher, just a custom character. We've seen a fair few already, but one became the poster child for all the wrong reasons — a woman from the earlier trailers. Gamers decried that Playground was enabling the 'uglification' of women in games and, well, you know the drill. Puffy cheeks, blemishes, all the things real women have put under a microscope. So, when they saw this 'new' character, they assumed Playground, under the strict command of newly-appointed Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, had capitulated and made her look more conventionally attractive.
It was also revealed that Fable will take 15-20 hours to complete, but the devs assured you can "literally play it forever."
Nope. This 'new' protagonist was merely the team showing off the character creator and how much freedom players will have in designing their own. "Earlier this year, we obviously revealed that we had some customization in our game," director Ralph Fulton told IGN. "It's not a revolutionary thing for an RPG to have, but nevertheless, there was some speculation that we didn't, and we were happy to reveal: yes, we did."
There's no big conspiracy or 'victory' to claim, just Playground showing various different characters they've made with the in-game character creator, as they have been doing from the beginning. And while Fulton is right that it's not exactly revolutionary for an RPG in 2026 to have customization options, it's new for the Fable series, which is noteworthy in its own right.
So, when Fable launches next year, you can make your own character however you want. Which just makes the outrage look that much sillier.
