Naruto is a story of a young boy, Naruto Uzumaki, with lofty dreams who aims to make history by fighting against his destiny. The author, Masashi Kishimoto, is known to be incredibly skilled at writing deep character stories.

Jiraiya started his journey as a ninja with limited talent; however, he held the potential to become great. Unlike his peers, he wasn't a genius, yet he managed to reach great heights by training. Jiraiya's story is one of perseverance. Throughout his life, he failed at the many tasks that he set out to do. Jiraiya failed to save his friend, Orochimaru, when he left the village. He failed to save his student, Minato, and then couldn't save his master, Hiruzen. Jiraiya even failed the Ame orphans he once saved.
However, despite that, he kept fighting till the end. Even in death, Jiraiya continued to struggle and eventually played a massive role in saving the world by shaping Naruto to be the man he is today.
Madara is yet another brilliant character written by Kishimoto. He grew up on the battlefield learning the trade of war. To him, his family, especially his brothers, were his most important bond. Yet, Madara lost them one by one. His goal was to create a place where children wouldn't have to die, the same as Hashirama.
However, seeing the prejudice in the village that the two created, Madara sought a better world. Manipulated by Black Zetsu, he ended up working towards the wrong goal for the wrong reasons. While Madara's conclusion was marred by Kishimoto, at heart, he was a character who wanted true peace.
Pain is one of the most compelling characters in Kishimoto's Naruto. The character itself was born as a result of war and bloodshed. The several wars that were fought in the common battleground of Amegakure forced the birth of Pain. Just like many others, Pain simply wanted equality and peace. However, only by making others experience the same pain as him would he truly be satisfied.
In his heart, he wanted justice and peace, but only by making others understand his pain did he think it was possible. In the end, he was moved by Naruto's words and chose to put all his trust in him, giving his life up for the sake of the greater good.
