The beloved actor, who passed away on August 25th at the age of 80, was probably best known for his role as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show — at least according to every single obituary written about him since. While that role propelled him to stardom (even by his own admission), he still went on to have iconic performances in movies such as Clue, Legend and, most importantly, Muppet Treasure Island.
If you'll indulge me, I'd like to share my favorite Tim Curry scene in any movie. It was in National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1, a spoof of buddy cop movies like Lethal Weapon. His character, the villainous enforcer Jigsaw, had gotten the drop on Emlio Estevez's character in a stairwell. When questioned as to who he was, Jigsaw replied, "Your worst nightmare." When Estevez crudely explained what his worst nightmare actually was, Jigsaw replied, "OK, I'm not your worst nightmare. But I'm right up there!"
Mr. Curry also had his fair share of video game roles, both as a voice actor and in live action FMV footage ("Space!"). That's what we want to celebrate today. These are ten of his best game performances, listed chronologically. Outside of these, he also lent his voice to Toonstruck (1996), Scooby-Doo! Night of 100 Frights (2002) and two Nicktoons games. Now, since I woke up today wanting to talk about the man who was originally cast as The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series (true story), here's a look at the rest of the gameography (is that a word? Well, it is now) of Tim Curry.
After Sierra On-Line garnered massive success with their King's Quest series of point-and-click adventures, they decided to go all in with a big cinematic production. They wanted a game with a dark, mature story and an impressive cast of Hollywood-level voice talent. The result was Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers, and the titular novelist turned investigator was voiced by none other than Mr. Curry himself. He even had the opportunity to showcase his range, pulling off an impressive and convincing Southern drawl.
Other cast members included Leah Remini (The King of Queens), Mark Hamill (the man who replaced him as The Joker in Batman: The Animated Series) and Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. (who voiced Alfred on that very same show). He was recast for the sequel, The Beast Within, by Dean Erickson, due to the game using live-action actors in full-motion video. When the series moved to 3D polygons in Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned, Curry was brought back to voice Knight once again.
When it comes to big, bombastic CD-ROM games from the 1990s, two names seem to repeatedly pop up: Tim Curry and Mark Hamill. Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger continued that trend in 1994, with Curry taking the voice role of the Kilrathi (the game's bad guys) diplomat Melek nar Kiranka, while the character was brought to life physically on-screen with full-costume animatronic puppetry. It also featured Tom Wilson (Biff from Back to the Future) and John Rhys-Davies (Lord of the Rings, the Indiana Jones films and, most importantly, Cats Don't Dance.)
Normally, when you think of Tim Curry in the role of a villain, you think of wildly flamboyant performances, like in Legend or even a few other games on this list. This time around, however, his performance is much more restrained, giving the character a dignified and regal feel. It's even more impressive when you consider those attributes are coming through underneath all of that puppetry.
