Doom: The Dark Ages - Revelations DLC Was Made Under Severe Crunch, Says Dev

A former id Software developer has opened up about the conditions at the studio shortly before the layoffs. This was around the same time that the team was working on DLC for Doom: The Dark Ages - which was reportedly made under severe crunch conditions.

Speaking with Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly for Insider Gaming, former ID Software producer Andrew Willis said that the Doom DLC, Revelations, was made under the "worst" crunch of many developers' careers. He says he personally put in 80 hours a week to get the DLC out the door, only to be laid off on launch day.

"There were two months where I was working something like at least 12 hours every day," Willis says. "I know I hit 17 a couple of days. It was brutal, and the majority of the game got made in three or four months."

This had an impact on Willis' personal life. "There were days where I didn’t see my son the whole day; multiple days of that that I sacrificed to get this out the door at the level of quality," he tells Kiwi Talkz. "And it’s not just me, but everybody on the team was really putting in the hours."

He continues, expressing how many shared this sentiment. "We had people that worked in Hollywood for 20 years and game development for 10 and said that this was the worst crunch they’d been a part of."

Willis adds that these hours were not mandated by anyone, but were necessary to get Revelations out the door in time. "You get loaded up with 60 hours of work in a week, and what do you do?" he explains. He adds that to reach "the level of quality that the player expect", the team went through "pseudo-induced crunch."

Willis has previously spoken out about how id Software has been treated under Xbox. He has blamed giants like Xbox for the problems facing the gaming industry right now, and said we need to see more developer-owned studios.

The layoffs at id Software were widespread, reportedly affecting 75 percent of the studio. The layoffs even included a studio veteran who had been with id since the Romero and Carmack days of the 1990s. Despite this, the team is still said to have a game in development.
