JRPGs were born on the NES, gained weight and relevance on the SNES, and took the world by storm during the PS1 era. In that timeframe, many incredible games emerged, some that genuinely conquered a worldwide audience, like Final Fantasy VII, and paved the way for other games in the genre.
Even so, we had countless titles that were never graced with the warm light of the spotlight, despite being incredible games. I was "lucky" enough to live in a country where the grey market was predominant, so I could try the most diverse JRPGs possible, which led me to discover several rare gems.
Today I want to highlight some PS1 JRPGs that, despite what the dedicated fanbase might say, are still fairly unknown and were never played as much as they should have been. Granted, some are hard to access and aren't available on modern platforms, but I know you can do your thing and find workarounds to play them.
I recognize that Vagrant Story is incredible, one of Yasumi Matsuno's masterpieces and one of the few games to receive a perfect score from Famitsu, but even so, it is not as famous as it should be. The number of players, especially current ones, who have never even heard of it is a bit jarring and even heartbreaking.
Vagrant Story introduced unusual mechanics in the PS1 era, including its Risk system, chaining abilities, a focus on crafting weapons dedicated to specific bosses, and other distinct gameplay elements. Because it takes place in Ivalice, Final Fantasy Tactics fans jumped at it expecting an interconnected narrative, but that was not quite the case. Still, it is worth experiencing, and I hope Square brings a modern port someday.
Okay, I am not going to say that you must play Thousand Arms. It's not necessarily a good game, but I would be lying if I said it isn't creative or doesn't present an unusual premise. On the surface, it plays out as a conventional JRPG: you explore cities, face enemies, gain experience and money, buy items, and save the world — you know, JRPG-y.
