Demon Slayer may appear to be a rather simplistic story with a straightforward plot and villains, but it has still managed to distinguish itself and become one of the biggest anime IPs of all time. Most recently, in 2025, we saw the release of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1— Akaza's Return. This movie, which kickstarted the final trilogy of the IP, still has massive influence on fans all over the world. After a year-long wait, Crunchyroll officially released it on the streaming platform on July 28, 2026.
Rewatching this theatrical masterpiece at home has reminded us of the unbeatable Blood Demon Art this movie introduced with Akaza’s Compass Needle. The Destructive Death Blood Demon Art grants him the Compass Needle, which was the most highlighted ability of the movie. Through it, Akaza could predict any attacks by sensing the fighting spirit, and only the Selfless State has managed to outdo this power.

This movie first premiered in theaters in July 2025 in Japan, and its global release followed quickly after. Seeing this masterpiece in theaters was an incredible experience, but on July 28, 2026, it gained immense popularity once again as it was released on streaming platforms globally.
Given that everyone has been rewatching Infinity Castle from the comfort of their homes now, fans have been mesmerized all over again by the unbeatable Blood Demon Art highlighted in the movie through Akaza, the Upper Rank 3. Akaza’s Blood Demon Art is Destructive Death, but its more important sub-ability is called Compass Needle. This ability was first unlocked by him after he became a Demon through Muzan’s blood, which we saw unfold in the movie flashback. Compass Needle manifests itself as a snowflake in reference to Akaza's late wife, whom he loved deeply and whom we saw in his flashback.
This power might seem simple, but it makes Akaza almost unbeatable when activated. With the Compass Needle on, Akaza is untouchable and able to see any attack launched. This becomes possible through the Blood Demon Art’s supernatural ability of sensing the fighting will. In simple terms, this means that any swing with the intent to “fight” is seen by Akaza and countered immediately. By sensing this will, he can even predict movement, detect weak spots, and assess the overall strength of an enemy. Coupled with Akaza's superhuman speed, strength, and regeneration, it makes him an almost unbeatable force. As seen in Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1, his strength was enough to easily overpower the Water Hashira Giyu and Tanjiro Kamado, even with their combined efforts and the latter resorting to Sun Breathing.
In almost every scenario, Akaza's Compass Needle is an unbeatable ability. That is because, under normal circumstances, it is basically impossible for one to conceal their fighting will. In a battle of life and death, one must attack with all their strength and focus their mind on fighting to survive and damage the enemy. So, beating Akaza becomes almost impossible. However, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part 1 did reveal a single flaw in this Blood Demon Art. If one can somehow conceal their fighting spirit, then Akaza's perception becomes useless. In theory, one shouldn’t be able to do that, as Akaza states that even a baby has a fighting spirit.
There is one supernatural power that makes countering Akaza possible. To completely cover the fighting spirit, one must unlock an ability that calms their mind and erases any aggressiveness, turning their mind into a state comparable to that of a plant. This is known as the Selfless State. Tanjiro was able to tap into this power after memories of his father rushed back into him. Tanjuro was always in the Selfless State, and a few days before his death, he demonstrated how to use this power by striking a bear down with no killing intent.
In Demon Slayer, only three characters have ever managed to unlock the Selfless State, those being Yoriichi, the strongest demon slayer to have ever lived; Tanjuro, the father of our protagonist; and, finally, Tanjiro in the newest movie. With both the Transparent World and the Selfless State, Tanjiro became the perfect counter to Akaza. The odds of encountering a slayer with this Selfless State are extremely low, and Tanjiro was lucky to be able to tap into this power at such a convenient moment. It must also be said that the Selfless State alone is not enough to beat Akaza. One must combine it with the Transparent World to be able to predict Akaza’s moves, and they must also be strong and fast enough to outdo the Upper Rank 3, which not many can achieve in the world of Demon Slayer. Had any other Slayer been sent out to fight Akaza, the battle would've ended tragically for the Demon Slayers.
