Very few games have the level of staying power that Dragon Quest XI has. Ever since it first launched way back in 2017, it has been one of Square's most cherished children. It's the best-selling game in the Dragon Quest franchise, and Square has made the game available on as many platforms as they possibly can. If a new piece of hardware is coming out, chances are Square is finding a way to make DQ11 run on it.
Now, almost a decade after the launch of the base game, Square is at it one more time with Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition for the Nintendo Switch 2. There was a version of the game released for the original Nintendo Switch in 2019, but Square has double-dipped with a Switch 2 version. It offers zero new story content, only focused on image quality and performance.
Ultimately, this is an attempt to bring Nintendo's version of DQ XI in line with the gorgeous-looking PS4, Xbox, and PC versions. This huge JRPG is easily one of the greatest video games ever made, and while the Switch 2 version doesn't have anything new to offer beyond the performance upgrades, it's a fascinating one to see in action.
When Dragon Quest XI first launched in 2017, the original Nintendo Switch was less than four months old. Though a stripped-down version did hit the 3DS in Japan, a proper Switch port wouldn't come until 2019. Even back in 2019, the mere prospect of Dragon Quest XI running well on the Switch felt dubious, at best.
Surprisingly, the Switch 1 version of Dragon Quest XI wasn't that bad in terms of its performance target. By Switch 1 port standards, DQ XI fared quite well. It had a fairly successful and stable target of 720p and 30 fps, but as is often the case, sacrifices had to be made in order to get the game running. Image quality had to take a somewhat severe hit, as the game often looked rather blurry, and in motion, it looked somewhat crunchy.
Even back in 2019, the mere prospect of Dragon Quest XI running well on the Switch felt dubious, at best.
In the Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest XI, Square offers two modes. The first is Performance Mode, which prioritizes 60 fps and 1080p. Graphics Mode, meanwhile, puts an emphasis on the visuals, opting for 30 fps and 720p, ultimately putting it in line with the original Switch version from 2019.
