It's now been three years this month since Bethesda unleashed Starfield on the world after what felt like a really long development cycle, and while it still has a ton of fans who can't wait to see what else Bethesda is cooking up for the game in the future, there are others who felt like it couldn't quite deliver on the immense pre-release hype.
What does that mean for a potential sequel though? Well, one former Bethesda developer has suggested they don't think a "Starfield 2" is likely, but also that if it happened, it'd get much closer to the "ultimate game" that was envisioned.
Here's what former Lead Systems Designer Kurt Kuhlmann had to say in an interview with FRVR (via IGN):
“I would be very surprised [if there was a sequel]. I don’t think Starfield was anywhere near successful enough to do a Starfield 2.”
“It’s, in a way, too bad, because I think with the lessons learned on Starfield, a Starfield 2 could have been much closer to the game that Todd [Howard] had [in mind]. You can envision that game, you can imagine that game. That’s not quite what Starfield really is.”
For what it's worth, Bethesda announced a big new roadmap back in July of things the studio was working on, and while it was dominated by Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, there was a specific mention of Starfield in there as well.
The company stated that they'd "continue expanding the Settled Systems with new stories, targeted gameplay improvements, and additional updates", while also "preparing for the launch of new Starborn content next year".
In other words, Starfield definitely isn't a done deal over at Bethesda right now, and there is a slight chance of a sequel if Xbox thinks it's worth another go. We're probably looking at many years away though, seeing how Fallout 5 and The Elder Scrolls 4 are absolutely massive games with multi-year development cycles.
