Metroidvanias, by their very nature, can be pretty long and complicated, with most entries in the genre taking several hours to complete and consisting of near constant backtracking.
Due to this design, many gamers avoid playing metroidvania games for shorter, more direct titles like the FPS Call of Duty series or even non-story-focused party and sports games.
However, there are several mertroidvania games found on the Xbox 360 that respect players' time and may even entice gamers to become metroidvania fans by featuring shorter runtimes, easy-to-understand puzzles, optional backtracking sections, and ways to easily travel across maps.
The Xbox 360 era saw several small and indie games debut on the console via Xbox Live Arcade, like Braid, Limbo, and 'Splosion Man, and while many of these games went on to become celebrated success stories, many went on to be largely forgotten with the passage of time, such as Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet.
Compared to other metroidvania titles, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is relatively light on its story offerings, as there's virtually no dialogue in the game at all and its intro sequence is the only explanation of the game's plot. It's centered around a mysterious shadow entity corrupting a star and its orbiting planets into monstrous shadow planets.
Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet is a fairly short metroidvania, taking around five hours to complete on average, but it makes up for its short runtime and lack of dialogue by featuring a classic cartoon design and fun gameplay centered around a flying saucer exploring infected areas of planets.
For Xbox 360 owners who want to play a game very similar to Nintendo's Metroid franchise without having to buy a Nintendo console, there's arguably no better game to check out than Chair Entertainment's Shadow Complex.
