At the beginning of the Naruto series, the protagonist Naruto Uzumaki made it quite clear that his dream was to become the Hokage. Around 15 years later, Naruto Uzumaki accomplished this dream of his by becoming the seventh Hokage of Konoha in Naruto chapter 700, which was officially released on November 10, 2014, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue 50.
With Naruto Uzumaki achieving his dream once and for all, most fans were content with his story and the development that took place over the years. However, Boruto has expanded upon Naruto's role as the Seventh Hokage and, in many ways, also done incomprehensible damage to his reputation. In the Boruto series, Naruto Uzumaki is now officially removed from the position of Hokage following his three-year-long absence. At the same time, there is now a stronger Hokage on the rise who is all but set to replace the Child of Prophecy and the Seventh Hokage. This person is none other than Sarada Uchiha.
Naruto Uzumaki met a very dark fate in the Boruto series. In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 55, which was released on February 19, 2021, Naruto Uzumaki lost the power of Kurama. In a shocking turn of events, after his fight against Isshiki Otsutsuki wrapped up, Kurama's chakra ran out completely following the utilization of Baryon Mode, and this eventually led to his death. Kurama quite clearly stated that Naruto was not going to be a superhuman any longer and that this weakened him drastically. In the fights to come, Naruto Uzumaki was nowhere near his previous power levels, which prompted Kawaki to seal him away.

In Boruto: Naruto Next Generations chapter 77, Kawaki took things into his own hands and decided to seal the Seventh Hokage in the dimension of Daikokuten, where he remains to this day. Three years have passed since Naruto's sealing, and it has been declared to the entire world that Naruto Uzumaki is dead and was killed by Boruto. The world has believed this lie, and now Konoha needs a new leader.
Having waited for three years without a proper leader, Konoha has now decided to take things into its own hands. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 36, which was officially released on July 18, 2026, Konoha moved to elect a new permanent leader and remove Shikamaru Nara from the Hokage office. As things stand, it is now a guarantee that Naruto will never be the Hokage of the village again, because by the time he comes back, Konoha will have moved on without even knowing that he was actually alive, which is incredibly sad.

When it comes to the candidates for the next position for the next Hokage of Konoha, there is only one that truly stands out, and that is Konohamaru Sarutobi, Naruto's very own apprentice. Konohamaru is the one who serves as Shikamaru's right hand right now, and while Shikamaru has certainly come under the scrutiny of the Daimyo of the Land of Fire, Konohamaru certainly retains some trust. The only person who is going to be made the Eighth Hokage of Konoha permanently is Konohamaru Sarutobi, which is certainly good for his overall character, but he will not stay Hokage for long. This is because we already know that by the end of the Boruto series, Sarada Uchiha will have to become the Hokage.
