Last month at gamescom 2026, I was able to go behind closed doors to preview a number of upcoming titles that I'm now very excited about. Most of my appointments were hands-on, meaning I actually go to pick up a controller and test out the action. There were a couple exceptions, however, one of which was Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, which was instead a hands-off look at the game and a quick Q&A session with the team.

In this meeting, I sat in a small crowd of fellow media members as we watched a live play session of the game, which was also narrated in real time by another member of the team behind the game. In these settings, it can occasionally be a bit of a challenge getting a firm grip on how a title is actually shaping up, simply because I don't have the hands-on experience, and the curated section of shown gameplay is likely a snippet the team feels extremely confident about, hence why it's the bit they're willing to show off.

After watching a nice chunk of Legacy of Atlantis, I'm personally feeling just a little bit mixed. I think the game looks great from a presentation perspective, and it also looks like it's going to be very fun (of course, a huge factor in whether you should play a game or not). I do, however, have a couple of lingering concerns now a couple of weeks removed from my exposure to the game. Let's dive in.

Let's start with the good bits, of which there really are many so far in what I've seen from Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis. First of all, the game looks really, really good in terms of presentation and graphical fidelity. Of course, the elephant in the room that's already been discussed to death is that Legacy of Atlantis has been confirmed to have used some "AI-assisted" placeholders during early development for some assets, all of which were reportedly replaced or "refined" by humans for the real game. I'll leave this bit here and allow you to decide what your personal stance is on this.

That caveat fully acknowledged, what we've now been shown in Legacy of Atlantis looks incredibly nice, with environments full of beautiful detail and intricate art design that is working well for me (for any concerns of AI, there's nothing I've seen so far that looks AI, which hopefully does point to every assisted asset being completely redone by real people). Open areas in sunlight are vibrant and colorful, while caves and tombs look appropriately dark, creepy, and also jam-packed with interesting archaeological locations and items.

Since this is a reimagining of the OG Tomb Raider title, it's also cool to see how the team has translated such an influential game and character to the modern era. Seeing this new Lara dual-wielding handguns in her classic attire, of course, brings back a lot of nostalgic vibes as she acrobatically flips up cliff ledges while climbing and exploring the terrain. The team mentioned they've worked in several iconic outfits and costumes to the game that can be unlocked, pointing to a love and respect for the OG title that they're hoping to capture in this new take.

We also got to see the new crafting system, which I'm sure some may be nervous about being added in, but I'm of the mind that it's going to serve the game well. Lara can pick up items around her, then open a crafting menu to quickly create things like healing flasks or some temporary boosts and protections.
