The central power system throughout most of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is, of course, Stands, the supernatural, pseudo-psychic entities that allow their users to manifest all kinds of wild phenomena. Some stands, including most of the most powerful ones, have fairly straightforward abilities; this one stops time, this one heals stuff, this one explodes stuff, so on and so forth. While these Stands are fun in how creative their usage can be, I wouldn’t call them especially “bizarre.”

Rather, one of my favorite aspects of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure are the really weird Stands, the ones with incredibly specific and/or esoteric abilities. The kind of stuff you wouldn’t even think could be realistically weaponized, but in fact, they end up being some of the most dangerous Stands imaginable. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say that, the dumber a Stand’s ability sounds, the more powerful it actually is. It’s bizarre Stands like these that really got me into this series in the first place.

Out of respect to anime-watchers, we’ll be sticking to Stands from Parts 3-6 here. Let the record show, though, I would definitely be including Stands from Parts 7-9 if I could.

Mild spoilers for JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure Parts 3-6!

As it was the Part that first introduced Stands, most of Stardust Crusaders’ Stand abilities are relatively grounded and straightforward. This one swims, that one is bound to a car, that one predicts the future, etcetera. I think, out of all the Part 3 Stands, the first one that really made me tilt my head was Nena’s Stand, Empress.

By getting a bit of her blood on her target, Nena can implant them with Empress, a sort of hybrid of Stand and flesh that gradually buds on the affected surface. It gradually grows into a humanoid shape, at which point it will begin actively trying to kill its victim, either by dragging them into danger or attacking them directly, as Joseph got to learn the hard way. The weird part, and something we don’t get a lot of info on, is that, apparently, Empress gives Nena the ability to completely parasitize other people and wear their bodies like skins. We see this ability coming undone after Joseph destroys Empress and Nena bursts out bloodily from the skin of a woman she was wearing.
