Leon Kennedy Easter Egg Spotted In Zach Cregger Resident Evil Movie

It's safe to say that the upcoming Resident Evil movie from Weapons director Zach Cregger is a vast departure from the previous set of films. If script leaks are consistent with the final product, those buying a ticket will find themselves with a fresh, grounded take on Capcom's world of the reanimated undead when compared to the Milla Jovovich-led films or the fan-service-heavy animated movies. With that said, there was a delightful easter egg for those who paid close attention to the latest film's last teaser.

A small reference to fan favourite character Leon S. Kennedy has been spotted by X user Hoodini. In the last look at the film we got, they noticed that the gun store, which should be familiar to those who played the original Resident Evil 2, is under new management.

Instead of a rookie cop, this universe's Leon S. Kennedy is arming the people of Raccoon City, as we can spot his name on a storefront. Whether this means that he'll be in the movie has yet to be confirmed in any pre-release materials or official casting details, so this could just be an easter egg.

Other than the Umbrella Corporation, nothing suggests the movie exists in a way that significantly ties in with the games' universe. From Cregger himself has said, "I would feel like there's kind of no winning if I were to tell Leon's story, because the games do such a great job."

In the clip that was shared by Sony Pictures, there's no evidence to suggest that the main protagonist even enters the gun store. After all, Bryan (played by Austin Abrams) is already packing the second he comes out of the manhole. In addition, it'd be a retcon overwriting an existing beloved character. That would certainly be a weird stretch if it was anything more than the equivalent of a background gag.

Speaking of gags, the movie was apparently much more comedic in tone than expected. So much so that jokes have been removed prior to release. The Resident Evil franchise is artful at managing to balance the tension against more comedic moments across the video games and films. That's because a lot of the influence in the original game's stories is taken from low-budget American action and horror films. The tone of the fan-favorite Resident Evil 4 leaned towards tongue-in-cheek in both its original iteration and remake. Cregger is taking a similar approach, and little fan-service moments like this may simply just be his way of satisfying fans with an inside joke rather than shoehorning a game lead into a movie he doesn't comfortably fit within. We'll know for sure when Resident Evil makes its way to theaters on September 18.
