gamescom 2026 Mega Man Dual Override Preview: Igniting the Flames of Nostalgia

One of the longest running active gaming franchises in the world, Mega Man has no shortage of adventures. Our little blue bomber has gone through the ringer, with various mainline titles along with side stories such as Mega Man Legends, Mega Man Battle Network and Mega Man X.

Each game is different in their own right, but sometimes players just want to go back to where it all began. That is what Mega Man Dual Override has to offer. While it’s not an official numbered Mega Man game, it certainly plays like one. This is

At Gamescom this year, we were able to sit down with a build featuring three different levels and, while not revolutionary by any means, we came away nostalgic for the classic Mega Man experience.

From a combat perspective, Dual Override doesn’t feel drastically different from what players have come used to. Before going into any of the missions, we are given a couple of different options in terms of Mega Man’s special ability. One of more defensive, another is offensive, and another is Rush, being more platforming centric. Depending on what you play, it will drastically change your play style, especially if you go offensive.

We primarily stuck to the offensive, and it felt very good. We tried out the defensive shielding, but it felt too reactive, meaning it was more of an emergency button rather than something you time. The offensive skill essentially allowed Mega Man to pre-charge his buster in-between shots. It’s not something out of the ordinary, but compared to how it worked in the past, it saved us having to hold down a button every time we shot.

In typical Mega Man fashion, our blue bomber also has different modes he is able to swap between, generally obtained by defeating bosses and absorbing their powers. In this build, we were only able to test out two, the first being the default Mega Buster, and the other was Jet Stinger.

Like past games, these essentially act as abilities, having a specific amount of gauge that can be used before it becomes useless. The Jet Stinger is a mix of mobility and damage, with a focus on the former. This move dashes Mega Man forward, traveling a good distance and doing damage to anything in his way. This is very good to be used for i-frames, as it will blast through attacks without doing any harm to Mega Man. This definitely felt better at a level than a boss fight, but it certainly has its value in the latter.

As is in the name, Mega Man will also have a new ability called Dual Override. This can be triggered through two different methods. The first is to fill the meter on the top left and trigger it manually, while the second is more of a defensive method. It will also activate even when the bar isn’t full when Mega Man is nearing death as a last-ditch effort. This will buff our protagonist into doing more damage with every shot.
