Naruto Uzumaki is the protagonist of the brilliant Naruto series, and at its very beginning, on September 21, 1999, he announced his goal of wanting to become the Hokage to us. At the end of the Naruto series on November 24, 2014, in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump Issue #50, Naruto Uzumaki successfully accomplished this goal and became the Seventh Hokage. From here onwards, he led an era of peace, which unfortunately was largely unseen.
Thankfully, the Boruto series gave us a few glimpses of Naruto Uzumaki as the Hokage, but in the process, also ended up ruining his legacy as the Seventh Hokage forever. Not only was Naruto Uzumaki severely weakened in the Boruto series, but as confirmed in the newest chapter, he is now being removed from the position of Hokage forever. With Konoha no longer having an official leader at this moment, the village is set to elect a new permanent Hokage and cast aside Naruto Uzumaki forever. Boruto is looking to continue the events of the post-Mamushi arc on September 17, 2026, with Two Blue Vortex Chapter 37, and as Naruto Uzumaki's position weakens even further, his character arc takes another hit.
When Naruto Uzumaki became the Hokage of Konoha, most fans expected to see more of him in this position. Naruto could have revolutionized the entire world during his time as a leader and, most importantly, revolutionized his own village. While he certainly has had some influence, the fact that the franchise went on to change protagonists immediately after Naruto Uzumaki became the Hokage meant that he suffered tremendously. As the focus was taken to Boruto Uzumaki, Naruto received little attention.
What's worse is that Naruto Uzumaki was officially nerfed following his ascension to the position of Seventh Hokage in the battle against the likes of Momoshiki and, later down the line, Jigen. Naruto was not allowed to use his full strength because, otherwise, the next generation would not have had much to do. What's worse is that, in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter 55, which was released on February 19, 2021, he lost the power of Kurama as well, officially weakening him further.
“Normally, when a Jinchuriki's Biju is extracted, they die. But that doesn't apply to you. The Biju chakra simply vanishes. It might look to others like you're dead, but you're just in a temporary state of shock. Don't worry, you'll wake up soon. The price to pay for Baryon Mode is my life, not yours. I've got to go, but be real careful. You aren't gonna have superhuman strength anymore. So if you overdo it, you'll end up joining me soon. An even worse fate followed as he was sealed away by Kawaki in the dimension of Daikokuten in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 79 on March 19, 2023. Since then, Naruto Uzumaki has not shown up. What's worse, Konoha has declared the Seventh Hokage dead, and three years have passed since then, meaning Naruto Uzumaki's return to the position of Hokage is now impossible. In Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #36, which was released on July 19, 2026, the short and uneventful reign of the Seventh Hokage was officially closed. Kashin Koji's newest Prescience vision showed Konoha with a new Hokage, and that person is none other than Konohamaru Sarutobi.
"Abetting a traitor is a serious crime. It'd be no different for the accomplices, but for now, as the leader, the Hokage must be held accountable right away. I've already submitted a report to Lord Daimyo, so it is only a matter of time before we receive his approval to relieve Shikamaru Nara as the Hokage." — Konoha prepares to replace Shikamaru as Hokage, Boruto: Two Blue Vortex Chapter #36
Up until now, Shikamaru Nara was seen as the Hokage of the village, but Shikamaru made it clear to not take this position officially. This is especially because he was under the impression that Naruto was still alive. With Shikamaru now being removed from this position for joining hands with Boruto Uzumaki and collaborating as a traitor, it is time for Konoha to elect a new Hokage. Konohamaru Sarutobi is looking to be the Eighth Hokage of the village, meaning Naruto's time as the Hokage has officially ended.
