The series’ signature beautiful artwork
The artisan card type is a neat addition but feels a bit at odds with how upgrading works
The helper meeples are so small, it’s only a matter of time before one either breaks or is lost to the void

I remember stumbling across the original Everdell a number of years back while meandering through the board game area at PAX East. With its striking box art, featuring a badger alongside other woodland critters all in an idyllic forest, I was sold before I even knew what sort of game it was, and it would quickly go on to become one of mine and my wife’s favorite board games. Now, Emerland, the latest standalone title in the series, has been released, and this new jungle-themed romp does far more than apply a new coat of paint on Everdell. The clever tweaks and new mechanics make the old Everdell formula feel fresh all over again, so it'll go over well even if you're a long-in-the-tooth veteran of the best board games.
At its core, Emerland is still an Everdell game with its general gameplay and fundamental mechanics remaining largely untouched. On their turns, players will be placing out their workers to gather the resources needed to build Constructions and recruit various Critters into their burgeoning city, which serves as your main point-scoring engine. Each round, portrayed as a single season, you will send your workers to the various locations or even onto other players' city cards in order to collect the resources required to build or bring new cards into your town or gain additional benefits to help earn you points for the endgame. New to Emerland are special realm cards that can also increase the number of buildings or townsfolk you can add to your town, in essence replacing the event cards from previous iterations of Everdell.
