Dragon Ball: Gekishin Squadra’s one-year anniversary celebration revealed the game is basically being killed off and then resurrected into something entirely different.
As Xenoverse, Kakarot, Sparking Zero, Legends, Dokkan, and oh so much more have proven, Dragon Ball fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to video games. Perhaps the most interesting swing that has been made in the franchise is Gekishin Squadra, a MOBA that released last year and got off to a good start.
One year later, though, that’s not really the case. While Gekishin Squadra has continued to get regular updates and has a dedicated playerbase, the numbers just haven’t really been there. The Gekishin Squadra team seems to know this, as it’s announced a radical overhaul that’s basically turning it into a completely different game.
Yesterday, Dragon Ball Gekishin Squadra hosted a one-year anniversary celebration, which honestly ended up feeling more like a send-off to the game as we know it. Squadra is going to be getting a massive update at the end of the year that seems to be moving it much further away from a MOBA and more into an online battle game of sorts.
The big change is with the camera, which will now be third-person instead of from above, making it much more similar to pretty much every other Dragon Ball game. Squadra’s rules are also changing to focus more on collecting Dragon Balls, and it seems like many of the MOBA elements are being stripped away.
The visuals are also getting overhauled, which I don’t really think was necessary since Squadra’s style was one of its best elements.
While the new version of Squadra seems like it will have more general appeal, the decision is being met with a lot of mixed reactions. Squadra players are already mourning the game that they’ve fallen in love with, with one Twitter post from DbsHype being full of sad comments and questions about what the game is becoming.
It’s not just fans that seem to be having a hard time, either, as the livestream notably featured a “heartbroken” sounding Toshi, one of the game’s lead developers. It’s clear that this move is being made to save whatever’s left of the game instead of just calling it quits, but it’s a big move away from what Squadra was made to be. The official website claims it's for balance and skill reasons, and not because of playercount, though.
