It's the end of an era for Final Fantasy 14, as Final Fantasy 14 Mobile officially shuts down. Unfortunately, many players who had hoped to someday get their chance to check out Final Fantasy 14 Mobile were left wanting.
Final Fantasy 14 Mobile was officially revealed back in 2024 following considerable rumors suggesting its existence. FF14 Mobile officially launched in June 2025, and offered a mobile take on A Realm Reborn, the MMORPG's first story. Unfortunately, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile failed to experience the same level of success as the original game.
Just over a year after its release, Final Fantasy 14 Mobile has shut down and become unplayable. The reveal that the game would close came back in July, and as planned, the game is now offline. Support and online forums will follow, with a shutdown planned for October 15. The decision came down from Square Enix, which had announced that "changes in the market environment" led it to terminate its agreement with Tencent. Many have speculated that the game wasn't successful in finding enough players or wasn't generating enough revenue, but no further information has been provided by official sources.
Initially, the plan was to eventually roll out Final Fantasy 14 Mobile to other regions once the Chinese version had been established. However, those versions are now canceled, and the game will effectively become lost media, as it will no longer be accessible at all. While most of the game featured identical content to the standard MMORPG, some unique cosmetics were created for the game, which players of the original have been envious of. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like those will migrate to the standard version, possibly due to the nature of the licensing agreement with Tencent.

While some Final Fantasy 14 fans are disappointed by the move, and its active playerbase is likely unhappy, the situation has changed since the mobile version's launch. Final Fantasy 14 is now available for Nintendo Switch 2, giving players a way of playing the game without being tethered to a standard console or PC. Some have argued that the mobile version was more practical when out and about, as it could natively access a device's mobile data, while the Nintendo Switch 2 relies upon either a LAN connection or Wi-Fi. Others have pointed out, however, that setting up a mobile hotspot is a possibility for those players, and that the Nintendo Switch 2 version offers the entire game, while the Mobile version might have taken years to catch up with the original version.
It's a pity that the adaptation of the game didn't work out, but thankfully for fans of the genre, this is one of the few instances of a Square Enix MMORPG failing. Final Fantasy 11 is still going strong 24 years after its original launch, and Final Fantasy 14 is gearing up for its next expansion. While the MMORPG almost didn't survive in its early days, it's become extremely successful, and Final Fantasy 14's rebirth remains one of the greatest gaming comebacks in histordy.
