PS5 Emulator Can Now Officially Run GTA 5 At 60fps On PC

PS5 emulators have made some impressive strides over the last few months. We’ve gone from Demon’s Souls launching to a black screen to the game rendering and being playable, albeit at roughly 2fps. Development is progressing much faster than anyone expected, and now, in a huge development for KyTyPS5, the emulator is capable of running Grand Theft Auto 5 at 40–60 fps. There’s just a slight hitch.

As seen in the X post embedded below, the prologue runs at a steady framerate with a few visual hiccups, but the game completely crashes as the player exits through the garage door. So, it’s not perfect, but considering that 3D games were struggling with the main menu just a few months ago, it highlights the breakneck progress being made.

The obvious question here is whether it will run GTA 6, and it’s impossible to say until the game is in the hands of emulators. Of course, it won’t be playable on PC from day one, but with these strides, the possibility of it running on an emulator before the official PC port releases is far more plausible. These emulators have crossed some significant hurdles, after all, handling a hugely complex game while maintaining a surprisingly consistent framerate.

There’s an important caveat, though. GTA 5 was originally developed for the PS3 and Xbox 360, before being ported to PS4, Xbox One, and eventually PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s even been emulated on Nintendo Switch, meaning the game has been adapted to considerably less powerful hardware than the PS5.

GTA 6, meanwhile, is being developed for much newer hardware. Not only that, but it’s launching towards the end of the PS5/Xbox Series generation, with enhancements for the PS5 Pro. It will be considerably more demanding to run than its predecessor. So, even if PS5 emulators make substantial improvements between now and November, that doesn’t necessarily mean GTA 6 will be an easy feat to get running. There’s still a lot of work to be done.

But that’s what makes this such a promising development. A PS5 emulator running GTA 5 at 40–60 fps might not prove that GTA 6 on PC is right around the corner, but it does show just how quickly the technology is advancing. And if this rate of progress continues, the idea of playing GTA 6 on PC through emulation before Rockstar officially brings it to the platform suddenly doesn’t sound nearly as ridiculous as it did a few months ago.
