GTA 6 Officially Features RDR2-Like Gun Feature

Grand Theft Auto 6 is already shaping up to be a major evolution for Rockstar's open-world game formula, with the sequel introducing more detailed systems across everything from vehicle theft to police pursuits, and that applies to gunplay as well. GTA 6 is also bringing back plenty of familiar ideas from previous Rockstar games, though they are significantly expanded for Leonida.

The Extended Look on Netflix blew open the floodgates for Grand Theft Auto 6 news, with fans getting a look at the game in action and plenty of content following then. Even now, it seems Rockstar is working with Miami to bring even more GTA 6 marketing to the fore, and more is expected before release in November. More is clearly on the way, but one of the most interesting features confirmed so far is GTA 6's take on the iconic Dead Eye feature from Red Dead Redemption 2.

It's worth mentioning that slow-motion combat is nothing new to Grand Theft Auto, as GTA 5 already gave Michael De Santa a special ability that could slow down time and give him an advantage during shootouts. GTA 6 appears to be taking that basic concept in a more recognizable direction, though, borrowing some of the visual language and functionality associated with Red Dead Redemption 2's Dead Eye.

As seen above, GTA 6 features a purple meter underneath the health bar with an eye icon, and the extended GTA 6 footage contains several examples of action unfolding in slow motion in connection, making the connection to Dead Eye difficult to ignore. While Rockstar has not necessarily called the ability "Dead Eye" in the same way it does in Red Dead Redemption 2, the combination of the eye icon, dedicated meter, and slow-motion shooting makes it look like GTA 6 is borrowing heavily from the system.

Jason is said to be a more basic fighter than Lucia, whose martial arts training develops her technique further. Only Jason has been shown to use "Dead Eye" so far, meaning it may be a feature exclusive to him, explained through his military training.

Red Dead Redemption 2's Dead Eye allows players to slow the world around them and focus on targets during gunfights, eventually becoming more powerful as the game progresses. GTA 6 could be approaching the concept differently, especially since a modern open-world crime game has very different combat needs from a Western. Still, the presence of a dedicated meter suggests GTA 6's slow-motion ability won't simply be a cinematic effect, and players may need to manage when they use it during particularly dangerous encounters.

Rockstar has yet to fully detail every aspect of GTA 6's apparent Dead Eye system, so there are still questions about exactly how the meter works, what causes it to recharge, and whether the ability will evolve as the game progresses. GTA 6 is taking one of Rockstar's most recognizable combat mechanics and adapting it for a modern crime story all the same.
