We know very little about the Fable reboot's story right now. From what we can glean, Playground has created a pastiche of the first three Fable games, admittedly leaning more towards the Fable 2 era, as it tells a unique story from the Lionhead releases.
Now, we have a bit more information on the story - and particularly its ending - thanks to an interview with The Guardian. Here, game director Ralph Fulton dives into the narrative and Playground's aims as it tackled its first RPG. One of these aims is to recreate one of the most iconic parts of a Fable game - having to make a huge sacrifice to do the right thing.
Speaking with The Guardian, Fulton is clearly aware that the ending of a Fable game is the bit that stays with us. He outlines how he aims to respect that legacy.
"In great Fable fashion, it culminates in a choice that really challenges you to think about who you are, with a real personal cost to weigh against the outcome," he says.
Personally, that reminds me of Fable 2's ending, in which your journey to avenge your sister ends with you being able to bring her (and your dead dog) back... or sacrifice her so that everyone else can have their loved ones revived instead. It's a fan favourite for a reason.
While we don't know the specifics yet, it is reassuring to hear that Fulton and the team want to touch on that theme of sacrifice, and your hero being defined by your actions. Fulton says that the team has "relentlessly pursued quality" with the ending, and hopes that it will "stick the landing".
So far, we know that the story will revolve around the player character's village, Briar Hill, being attacked. All of the inhabitants will be petrified, and our quest will revolve around trying to undo this. We know that Jack of Blades from the original Fable will play some kind of role in the story, as well as a new villainous hero played by Hayley Atwell.
Fable is set to launch on February 23, 2027.
