When it comes to the greatest Dragon Ball fights of all time, the top three feels set in stone: Goku VS Vegeta, Goku VS Frieza, and Gohan VS Cell. The Majin Buu Saga has some solid battles, but reading the manga, it's painfully clear Akira Toriyama was running on fumes and wanted to wrap things up. Gohan’s fateful showdown with Cell feels like the end of an era – the last truly great Dragon Ball Z fight.
34 years since Gohan and Cell fought to the death at the Cell Games, Dragon Ball is flashing back to what was once the series’ intended finale. While Gohan wasn't able to keep his protagonist title for long after beating Cell, he's been promoted to the franchise’s main character once again with the release of Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. With the manga’s comeback on the horizon, Dragon Ball is reminding fans how the series’ strongest Z-Fighter got to where he is today.
The latest installment of the Toriyama Archives on the Official Dragon Ball Site features a beautiful color page from Dragon Ball Chapter 404 / Dragon Ball Z Chapter 210, which officially begins Gohan's final battle with Perfect Cell in the Cell Games. The fight truly feels like a last hurrah for the series, especially following Goku's swansong of a showdown with Cell right before. Gohan working through his insecurities about fighting and his anger problems feels sudden, but makes for strong character drama.
The battle also perfectly embodies Dragon Ball's core themes: there will always be someone better and the next generation will always be stronger than the last. Goku finally passes the torch onto Gohan and while he initially hesitates, watching Gohan slowly build the courage to fight back against Cell – take things to far and lose his father – only to pull himself back from the brink of despair is amazing storytelling. It's for the best Dragon Ball didn't end here, but Gohan VS Cell would have been an amazing finale for Dragon Ball.
The fight choreography, Toriyama's paneling, and the raw emotion are electric: it's one of the best final battles in the series. Gohan unlocking Super Saiyan 2 hits so much harder than Goku triggers Super Saiyan 1, and the stakes feel high, especially with Goku's seemingly final death (at the time). Toriyama was firing on all cylinders during the Cell Games, and it's a shame he couldn't make Gohan being the lead work in the long run.
The Dragon Ball Super manga has been on hiatus for so long, most fans don't even remember that Gohan is actually the protagonist right now. Following the end of the Super Hero Saga, Toyotarou kept the story going for three chapters set after the events of the battle with Cell Max. These chapters are told entirely from Gohan's point of view, and focus on him wrapping up loose ends from Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero and then testing his power against Goku, Broly, and Vegeta.
Even when Goku re-enters the story, the manga continues to be told from Gohan's perspective – something that didn't even happen during the Majin Buu Saga. There is a very real chance Gohan will be the focal character alongside Broly during the Black Frieza Saga. Dragon Ball Super Chapter 103 heavily suggests that Gohan and Broly are the faces of the series' future, with Goku and Vegeta no longer the strongest Saiyans in Dragon Ball. Which is another important detail: Gohan Beast is far and away the strongest Z-Fighter right now. If anybody stands a chance at beating Black Frieza, it's him.
