Nintendo fans are in for an exciting week, with the Big N hosting two different Direct presentations on September 8 and September 9, but a small detail about the general Nintendo Direct ends a long-standing tradition for the company. Following a few rumors, it turns out that Nintendo had two Summer Directs up its sleeve: a Nintendo Direct on September 8 at 7 am PT/10 am ET focused on Zelda's anniversary and a general Nintendo Direct on September 9 at 7 am PT/10 am ET. The former is reportedly 30 minutes long, while the latter is 45 minutes.
Without a doubt, anticipation is high for the Zelda Nintendo Direct as fans expect they'll get a release date for the Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, an update on the movie, perhaps finally Twilight Princess on Switch consoles, and a few surprises. That's not to say that the anticipation for the general Nintendo Direct is any less palpable, just less concrete at this moment, except for one key detail confirmed by Nintendo.
On Nintendo's YouTube channel (as seen above), there is currently a placeholder video for the launch of the September 9 general Nintendo Direct. The description on the video highlights that this presentation will "focus on Nintendo Switch 2 games launching this winter." Focusing on a specific time frame is not unusual, while that does not usually rule out surprises, but it's worth mentioning that only the Nintendo Switch 2 is specified—not the OG Switch, not language reflecting the Switch family of hybrid consoles, specifically the Nintendo Switch 2. The choice of words here, especially as it relates to marketing material, is important.
The past few Nintendo Directs, even after the critically and commercially successful launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, have included language reflecting the first Nintendo Switch console, too. Both the Nintendo Directs back in February and June 2026 had marketing language that specified the Switch, and this Nintendo Direct is the first to not do so. This does not mean that some of these Switch 2 games won't be compatible with the Switch, but that Nintendo is slowly shifting its language to focus on the Switch 2 to "phase out' the original Nintendo Switch.
This does represent an end of an era where the Switch 1 dominated Nintendo Direct presentations, as it should have, given how long it's been the Big N's premiere console. This is a shift toward the Switch 2 being the key focus here and moving forward, which was always going to happen eventually. It's been a year and a half (give or take) since the Nintendo Switch 2's 2025 release, so perhaps it's a little sooner than some expect, but the shift is here.

What is revealed at the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct remains to be seen, but there's a good chance this gives the world its first official look at Ubisoft's Just Dance: Decade of Hits before the company continues to show more on its own. Overall, it's the end of an era, but the start of a new one, too.
