I mean no disrespect to any individual game when I say livestreams like Gamescom Opening Night Live don’t really present titles at their best.
The problem is, when you’re looking at a montage of trailers, the themes and mechanics all start to blend together. Isolated on its own, the latest dark fantasy Soulslike may look amazing – but back-to-back-to-back, they all blur together.
I think Showa American Story managed to somehow stand out during Geoff Keighley’s event, though, thanks to its mixture of citypop, short-shorts, and zany minigames – including hopscotch and a Space Harrier knock-off.
Truth be told I’m still not entirely sure what this game is, but there’s a reason I booked an appointment to play it in Cologne this week, and I’m excited to report back.
