Undertale x Final Fantasy Official Crossover Has Deltarune Theory Bait

Undertale x Final Fantasy Official Crossover Has Deltarune Theory Bait

Fangamer has revealed the merchandise for the upcoming crossover between Undertale and Final Fantasy, with one piece already singled out as potential Deltarune theory bait for the upcoming Chapter 6.

While Undertale launched in 2015, Toby Fox dreamed up the concept for Deltarune back in 2011. As such, elements of Deltarune were hinted at in Undertale, as well as post-launch social media comments, like Flowey mentioning Flowery's name back in 2024, two years before his Chapter 5 debut.

Undertale has become so popular that it's hosting crossovers with the Final Fantasy series, something a young Toby Fox with his Sephiroth business cards would likely have loved. The official Fangamer Twitter/X account has revealed some of the items that will be sold as part of the crossover, and fans have noticed one that sticks out like a sore thumb.

The Undertale x Final Fantasy crossover features pixel art drawings of characters from the former taking on jobs from the latter, which appear on different items or as individual pieces. These include Toriel as a White Mage, Undyne as a Dragoon, Mettaton as a Dancer (wearing the garb from Final Fantasy 14's Stormblood expansion), Flowey as a Black Mage, Frisk as a Beastmaster, and Sans with no job at all, because he doesn't need one.

The final character in the crossover is Papyrus, who has the Mystic Knight class from Final Fantasy 5. This is notable, because Papyrus is one of the candidates for the Roaring Knight in Deltarune, a character whose identity is still unknown as of Chapter 5, and is presented as one of the series' biggest mysteries.

While Papyrus is seen as something of a joke theory for the Roaring Knight, he's still a viable candidate, bearing a similar appearance (minus the antlers) and wanting to become a knight in Undertale. The player has only been told about Papyrus in Deltarune, so it's unclear if his personality is different in this reality, giving him a motive for bringing about the Roaring that fans are unaware of.

It's very much in keeping with Fox's history for lore elements to be teased in outside media, as was the case with the Deltarune Weird/Route B being hinted at in a series of LINE stickers before Chapter 2 was released. Then again, Papyrus being a knight could also be poking fun at fans who believe the theory.
