With Dragon Ball Super: Beerus scheduled to release in less than two weeks, the outcry for a remake of the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z has gotten louder than ever. Although the first anime has aged fairly well, DBZ is full of filler episodes, plot holes, and spotty animation that ultimately hold the series back – especially compared to modern shonen series like Demon Slayer or Chainsaw Man. The whole time fans have been pleading for a Dragon Ball Z remake, however, one has existed under their noses all along.
Dragon Ball SD is a full-blown remake of Akira Toriyama's original manga, albeit in an abridged fashion. DBSD acknowledges events from Dragon Ball Super and tosses in some new jokes, but as the series has gone on, the story has become more faithful to the events of Dragon Ball Z. The official DBZ remake is setting up a brand-new take on the Cell Games as Dragon Ball SD breaths new life into the series' best Saga.
The Cell Games are getting a coat a fresh paint in the October edition of Saikyo Jump. Dragon Ball SD Chapter 128, "Notice of the Cell Games" remakes Dragon Ball Z Episode 166 and Dragon Ball Chapter 388 / DBZ Chapter 194. Following Future Trunks' failed battle against Cell, he gives up all hope and readies himself for death ... only for Cell to announce that he has a better idea – he will host a World Martial Arts Tournament and fight Goku & the rest of the Z-Fighers to the death.
Since Dragon Ball SD generally breezes through the plot, the new chapter also covers Goku and Gohan exiting the Hyperbolic Time Chamber and getting to rest before the Cell Games. Given how DBSD is generally paced, Chapter 129 will almost certainly cover Goku's battle with Cell, with Chapter 130 likely adapting Gohan VS Cell. Dragon Ball SD's main goal is to remake Dragon Ball Z with a more comedic tone in-line with Dragon Ball's first three story arcs.
Even though Dragon Ball SD officially premiered back in 2010, the series still does not have a proper anime. Chapters are archived online and can actually be watched instead of read, but obviously, this does not replicate the adaptation process and is no different than fan channels who post their own "videos" of Dragon Ball Super chapters. It's perhaps for the best DBSD hasn't been adapted, though, as it's taken Naho Ooishi 16 years to cover what Akira Toriyama did in eight (and with more chapters, to boot!)
Once Dragon Ball SD finishes up the Majin Buu Saga within the next decade, we might finally see an anime. This will depend on if Dragon Ball and DBZ get a proper remake, though. Part of Dragon Ball SD's appeal is that it very much is a remake of the original series, despite making some changes. A truly faithful remake that adapts Akira Toriyama's manga as is would make a Dragon Ball SD anime ultimately worthless.
