During BlizzCon earlier this month, Blizzard unveiled various new game projects and updates to existing games like Overwatch. One of the biggest announcements of the event was a new cinematic trailer announcing the development of the hotly-anticipated Diablo V, as well as a surprisingly soon release window of spring 2029.
You might think that roughly three years is more than enough time to produce a new game, even one with a pedigree as massive as Diablo’s. However, depending on who you ask, that release window may not be the most realistic estimate. Specifically, Chris Wilson, co-creator of the Path of the Exile series, had some doubts on the matter.
In a video on his personal YouTube channel, Wilson spoke about the Diablo V reveal, noting that, while he is very excited for the game’s announcement and hopes it will return to some of the franchise’s established gameplay roots, he doesn’t think it can be realized in this timeframe, even with Activision Blizzard’s considerable financial backing in its corner.
In his video, Wilson spoke optimistically about the few bits and pieces that have been revealed about Diablo V, both in the new cinematic trailer and in the small bits of art and gameplay concepts that were revealed as part of the Diablo V panel at BlizzCon.
However, on the subject of release dates specifically, his expectations were a little more measured. "They've announced they're targeting spring 2029, which is both quite specific and quite soon," he said.
Based on the release of the latest Diablo IV expansion just a few months ago, Wilson estimates that the Diablo development team at Blizzard has only been whole-hog on Diablo V’s development for a scant few months.
