New RPGs That Will Definitely Age Like Fine Wine

New RPGs That Will Definitely Age Like Fine Wine

There are new RPGs releasing every year. Some are hits, some are misses, and many, many more are somewhere in the middle; not masterpieces, but also not disasters either. The fact that so many RPGs come and go is a testament to the incredible momentum of the gaming industry, but it's also an unfortunate reality that, for many developers, their game will not stand the test of time.

However, on rare occasions, an RPG comes around that is so unique, so unforgettable, that we can't help but assume that it will be talked about for years to come. These next RPGs fit into that category. They're all great games right now, but they also have this aura about them which suggests that 10 or even 20 years from now, we'll still be talking about them just as fondly.

Yes, Baldur's Gate 3 had a ton of hype, basically jogged to a Game of the Year win, and has largely maintained its momentum in the years since, and yet that still doesn't quite cover just how monumental this RPG is, and will continue to be. There's a reason why Wizards of the Coast can't find anyone who wants to develop Baldur's Gate 4 now that Larian is officially moving on from the franchise.

The fact is that, as much as other studios are going to want to emulate what Baldur's Gate 3 does so well, it's a massive undertaking, and very few (if any) will actually achieve the same level of branching narrative progression. Even Larian is going to have trouble capturing the same magic in its upcoming Divinity sequel. As it stands, Baldur's Gate 3 is one of a kind, and likely always will be, even when the copycats start rolling in.

Sometimes a game comes along that just hits on every level. Usually we only get one or two of them per console generation; games that simply can't be replicated, not by a sequel, or an imitation, or a spiritual successor. The Last of Us on PS3, The Witcher 3 on PS4 and Xbox One, and undoubtedly, one of the current generation's all-time classics is Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

It's not easy to quantify what exactly it is about Clair Obscur that struck a chord with so many gamers. It could be the stellar turn-based combat, the stunning worldbuilding, the unforgettable characters, or the heart-wrenching narrative. It could be all of the above. It's one of those games that just sings. Sandfall Interactive will make other games, and other developers will try to recapture some of the game's magic, but at the end of the day, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 will be remembered for a long, long time as a once-in-a-generation masterpiece.

The first Kingdom Come: Deliverance certainly garnered a following with its tough-as-nails realistic medieval sim design, but it also alienated people with that same design. It was popular enough to earn a sequel, though, and somehow Warhorse manage to preserve that hardcore medieval sim element while making the rest of the game more palatable for gamers of all shades.
