Long before live-streamed showcases, social media feeds, instant online news updates, or debating on gaming forums, newsstands and mailboxes held the keys to the entire video game industry. There was nothing quite like the smell of fresh ink, the thrill of unfolding a central pull-out poster, or the excitement of devouring secret cheat codes and walkthroughs word for word.
I mean, I wouldn’t even be a games journalist if it weren’t for magazines! Back when I was a kid, I got completely obsessed with The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask and convinced my dad to buy every single magazine that even mentioned the game – and that was my very first step into this world.
So, for anyone who misses that golden era as much as I do, or simply cares deeply about preserving the medium's rich legacy, the Video Game History Foundation has just unlocked a monumental achievement.
When the Video Game History Foundation first launched its public research library last year, the archive featured roughly 1,500 out-of-print issues. In under a year and a half, the team has more than tripled that footprint!
The non-profit organization has officially expanded its public digital archive, offering over 5,000 fully digitized, text-searchable retro gaming magazines for free online research, accounting for nearly 600,000 total pages of pure gaming history. The current collection now spans a massive 45-year timeline from 1981 through 2026, representing around 60 percent of the physical magazine collection the foundation has cataloged to date.
