Video games are often high-stakes affairs, with heroes trying to save the world from villains, usually by slaying countless enemies in their path. Lou's Lagoon eschews the impending apocalypse in favor of something a bit more low-key, with a safe quest that players can take at their own pace.
Lou's Lagoon is an action platformer that starts with the player receiving a distress call from their uncle, the titular Lou. After designing their protagonist, the player travels to the Limbo archipelago, a series of islands that Lou frequents, in search of the missing pilot, whose plane is nowhere to be found.
It seems Lou didn't do much housekeeping in the Limbo archipelago, as it's in a terrible state when you arrive, with buildings boarded up, bridges left unfinished, and power stations that aren't hooked up to anything. The islands are home to all manner of anthropomorphic animal creatures, mostly friendly and jovial, but not great at taking care of their home, and they need a plucky assistant to help with the housework.
With tools in hand, the player must solve the mystery of Lou's disappearance while collecting resources and finishing sidequests to restore the islands to their proper state. Thankfully, their seaplane has unlimited fuel, and there are no pesky air traffic laws preventing them from dashing to each island.
The protagonist in Lou's Lagoon is quickly given an item called a Swirler, which acts as a combination item picker and builder. The Swirler can grab bits of wood and stone strewn around the island's beaches, which can later be cobbled into more useful items at crafting stations. If the player stumbles upon a broken building, the Swirler can also instantly fix it, assuming they have the correct materials.
Lou's Lagoon is primarily a platformer, and the player can double-jump across the world, with a glider unlocked in the first few hours that helps the protagonist cover even more ground. Jumping is all about exploration, as while there are enemies in Lou's Lagoon, they can't actually hurt you: they mostly just steal resources which can be reclaimed. There's also no penalty for falling from massive heights.
When the time comes to explore one of the other islands, the player can jump in their trusty seaplane and depart for new shores. The map is fairly compact to explore, and while there are hazards, they only temporarily knock you off course. Lou's Lagoon is all about relaxing adventures, not learning all of Isshin, the Sword Saint's, tells to parry him, so don't expect to die on this quest.
