Being responsible with money and resources is hard enough as it is, so I get why some people would prefer to spend their in-game savings without thinking too much; it’s only natural. After all, what’s the point of collecting all of these materials if you’re never going to treat yourself to a nice new weapon once in a while?
Unfortunately, some FPS titles disagree with me. Depending on the game, wasting crafting materials, ammo, or other valuable resources can have unpleasant consequences that you don’t want to deal with. Yes, some of them are easily fixable, but others can leave you struggling to survive.
If you’re a fan of post-apocalyptic worlds, Metro Exodus will not disappoint. However, unlike many other traditional shooters, this game will force you to carefully manage your resources if you want a shot at survival. Although all resources are important, two types stand out: chemicals and materials. They can be collected while exploring abandoned buildings, so it’s probably starting to make sense why spending them without thinking ahead could become a serious problem.
Both of these materials are used to craft supplies, including ammo, gas mask filters, and throwables, while chemicals are used to maintain your equipment. The biggest issue is that spending too much on ammo, for example, can leave you without enough materials to craft the gas mask filters you need to breathe the irradiated oxygen of the surface world. This is particularly dangerous during the early stages of the game, where players haven’t had much time to build up a good amount of supplies.
Borderlands 2 is a first-person looter shooter that takes place on a dangerous planet full of violence and bandits. This means there’s also a solid selection of weapons to choose from. Enemies drop different firearms, merchants sell them, and loot containers give them as rewards; so far, so good. However, what players need to be very careful about spending too early are the so-called Golden Keys, which allow them to open the Golden Chest in Sanctuary.
Not only do these chests contain rare rewards, but by opening them, you scale the rewards to your character’s level. In other words, opening a chest at level 10 might give you an impressive weapon that will probably be extremely useful in the moment. However, by the time you reach higher levels, that firearm will be effectively useless, and you might not have enough Golden Keys left to open the chest again, since they're limited.
In Hunt: Showdown 1896, you’re a bounty hunter in the late 19th century tasked with tracking down monsters and killing them. However, other players are doing the same, so the monsters aren’t the only threat. The game features an extremely punishing death system, so you can see why caution is advised at all times. In any case, before entering a mission, you’ll have a chance to purchase weapons and tools using the in-game currency.
Naturally, beginners are often tempted to purchase a more expensive weapon right off the bat, but this will likely only drain their savings without providing any guarantee that the weapon will help them win. What makes the stakes so high is that when you die, you generally lose both your hunter and their equipped gear, no matter how expensive it was. All of this can make it harder to afford any decent equipment for quite a while, so saving whatever persistent currency you have until you're more comfortable with the game will help you avoid losing an expensive weapon while you're still learning.
