Remedy Entertainment may be preparing a new Alan Wake release, with a newly filed application bringing the mysterious Alan Wake’s Return name back into circulation nearly a decade after it first appeared. Alan Wake returned in a major way with Alan Wake 2 in 2023, and Remedy has continued expanding the franchise through additional content and its wider connected universe.
The application's name itself has a history that makes the new filing especially interesting. Remedy first registered Alan Wake’s Return in 2016, immediately sparking speculation that a sequel to the original Alan Wake was in development. That ultimately was not the case. Sam Lake later explained that the name referred to a live-action, in-universe production featured inside Quantum Break, rather than a standalone game, and said no future Alan Wake announcement was attached to the trademark at the time.
A new Alan Wake’s Return application has now appeared with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), with Remedy Entertainment listed as the owner and a filing date of September 15, 2026. The application, numbered 019422415, is currently under examination and covers several broad entertainment categories, including video games, films, music, audiobooks, comics, printed books and guides, clothing, television production, film production, and online services. Compared with the previous filing, which expired in September, the printed materials and clothing appear to be new additions. As of now, Remedy has not announced a new Alan Wake game or explained what the filing is intended to cover, meaning the application alone does not confirm Alan Wake 3 or any other specific project.

The breadth of those categories leaves several future release possibilities open. Video game software is explicitly included, but the same filing also curiously covers film, television, music, books, comics, and merchandise. That distinction matters because Remedy already has a partnership with Annapurna Pictures to expand Alan Wake and Control into film and television, with Annapurna leading the effort to bring the franchises into those formats while Remedy retains ownership of the IP. The new filing could therefore cover a game, an adaptation, a broader multimedia project, or it could simply provide broader protection of the name, as is often the case with these types of filings.

However, the timing is very different now compared to when Alan Wake’s Return first appeared in 2016. Alan Wake 2 successfully revived the series after more than a decade without a full sequel, becoming Remedy’s fastest-selling game and eventually surpassing two million copies while recouping its development and marketing investment. Remedy treats Alan Wake as one of its core franchises alongside Control, making renewed activity around the name more interesting than it was when the series’ future was still uncertain. That still doesn't mean another game is necessarily next, but it gives fans much more reason to watch what Remedy does with the trademark this time.
