Nintendo revealed and then opened pre-orders for a lot of stuff to celebrate The Legend of Zelda turning 40. The headliner of the collection is a 40th anniversary Zelda-themed Switch 2. The first series to get its own Switch 2, and it proved incredibly popular, selling out almost immediately. Unfortunately, it seems a lot of the limited edition consoles ended up in the hands of scalpers.
Pre-orders for the Zelda Switch 2 are currently sold out at Nintendo with no indication that they will ever be restocked. Nintendo might make more available when the console releases on October 29, or on Ocarina of Time launch day the week after, but that is far from guaranteed.
Those who missed out on the limited window they were given between pre-orders going live and the consoles selling out who desperately want one might now turn to scalpers and resellers. As always, I urge you not to do so, no matter how much you might want the new console (and it’s a good-looking console). However, I don’t think you need my dissuasion this time - all you need to do is look at how much scalpers are charging.
The most expensive listing on eBay right now is asking for $1738.37 when you combine the buy it now price with delivery fees. In the seller’s defense, they aren’t just selling the console. The listing also includes a copy of the Ocarina remake, the matching Pro Controller, and the Zelda carry case. Then again, if you were to buy all of those things combined directly from Nintendo, it would cost $730, so less than half what this scalper is charging.
The Pro Controller and carry case are also sold out.
That is the worst example, but there are plenty more which aren’t much better. A second bundle that includes all of the same items as above is listed for $1300, and one reseller who is really pushing their luck is trying to sell the console all by itself for almost the same price. They’ve listed it for $730 but tacked on almost $555 in delivery fees, so I can only assume they’re sending it from the moon.
If you are going to turn to resellers to get one of these consoles, scalpers hiding big charges in delivery fees isn’t the only thing you need to be wary of. There have also been reports of scammers listing photos of the console for hundreds of dollars in the hope that people will hurriedly buy them without reading the small print. It’s a tactic some used to con people when PS5s were scarce, confirming that what they’re actually selling is just a photo of the product people think they’re buying in the description. A description some might not read if they’re worried waiting to hit “buy it now” might mean someone beats them to it.
Scalping is something that continues to plague everything gaming touches, from consoles to trading cards. Speaking of which, here’s hoping Panini prints the official Zelda trading cards that were announced this week into oblivion so that scalpers don’t buy those up and ruin that for proper fans too.
