The map of GTA 6 is shaping up to be one of Rockstar’s most ambitious open worlds yet, with Vice City serving as the centerpiece of a much larger version of Leonida. Once players progress far enough through the opening missions to unlock free roam, they will reportedly be able to travel across the map without traditional barriers restricting where they can go. Leonida is an island without a panhandle, but its geography is considerably more varied than what players experienced in GTA 5.
In terms of overall scale, it was previously reported that GTA 6's map is reportedly around twice the size of GTA 5's, while offering roughly three times the playable area found in Red Dead Redemption 2. Vice City itself is said to be about twice the size of Los Santos, and the developed areas surrounding the city are reportedly 11 times larger than the built-up regions outside Los Santos. The world is also divided into five counties and includes approximately 10 cities and towns, giving GTA 6 players considerably more places to explore outside the familiar Vice City setting.
Rockstar appears to be putting just as much emphasis on density as it is on size, according to recent previews of GTA 6. Leonida contains multiple islands and extensive underwater areas, with diving equipment allowing players to investigate shipwrecks and search for hidden treasures. GTA 6 is also expected to feature hundreds of interiors, with Rockstar reportedly aiming to make as many buildings accessible as possible. Buildings with helipads are particularly notable, as they are said to be fully explorable, allowing players to reach upper floors through stairs or elevators without loading screens. Mount Kalaga, located toward the northern part of the map, will also serve as Leonida's highest point.

The map itself is reportedly designed to be useful beyond simply getting from one location to another. GTA 6 features an extremely detailed pause-menu map that uses satellite-style 3D imagery, allowing players to examine buildings, businesses, gang locations, and other points of interest. That information can become especially useful when preparing a heist, as the map can reportedly display details such as potential entrances and exits and even the value of available loot. The amount of information shown also changes with the zoom level, with only major roads and highways visible when viewing the entire map and smaller roads and alleys gradually appearing as players zoom closer.
Exploration will also play an important role in revealing Leonida. Areas that have not yet been visited will remain obscured by a fog-of-war system, meaning players will gradually uncover the world as they travel through it. Getting around Vice City and the surrounding regions should not always require driving, either. GTA 6 reportedly includes numerous forms of public transportation, including buses, trains, taxis, the RydeMe ride-sharing service, and the Metromover. Players can choose to skip these journeys or use them as opportunities to interact with NPC passengers, hold full conversations, and listen to the radio.
The map also appears to be closely connected to GTA 6's wanted system. Locations where players previously committed crimes can develop temporary "heat" zones, with police reportedly establishing a perimeter around the crime scene and remaining more vigilant in the surrounding area. These locations appear in red on the map, with a larger lighter-red region showing the broader area affected by the police presence. At the highest six-star wanted level, that heat reportedly expands across the entire map. Players can purchase garages throughout Leonida, although safe houses reportedly won't be available for purchase. Jason and Lucia's home changes during the story as the pair remain on the run, giving GTA 6's version of Vice City a more dynamic role in their lives.
