007 First Light Officially Hit With Another Major Delay

007 First Light Officially Hit With Another Major Delay

The Nintendo Switch 2 port of 007 First Light will not arrive in 2026, as developer IO Interactive (IOI) has confirmed that the upcoming release on Nintendo's current-gen console has been delayed by several months. 007 First Light is currently available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

007 First Light is an origin story that shows how iconic MI6 agent James Bond earned his 007 number. With Hitman franchise developer IO Interactive at the helm of the project, 007 First Light received favorable reviews from critics following the game’s launch, citing the story and combat sequences as main highlights. The success did not go unnoticed, as Amazon executive Jeff Gattis stated that James Bond could receive more games in the future but stopped short of confirming if any projects were in development.

Months after announcing that 007 First Light would arrive on Switch 2 in the summer of 2026, IO Interactive has stated on social media that that will no longer be the case. Instead, 007 First Light on Switch 2 now has a release window of March 2027, just under a year after the game's May 2026 arrival on other platforms, with a more precise date coming later. IOI explained that the main reason behind the delay was to optimize the game so it could run smoothly on Nintendo's hardware. The dev also confirmed that the game's Switch 2 demo that appeared at Gamescom will also be featured at the Tokyo Game Show 2026, which runs from September 17 to 21, for attendees to try out.

Some James Bond fans were supportive of IOI's decision to delay 007 First Light on Switch 2. Other fans expressed hope on social media that physical copies of 007 First Light would launch on full game cards rather than on the Switch 2's Game-Key Card format. Since 007 First Light requires approximately 80 GB of storage space, some compromises would need to be made to ensure the game can fit on a 64GB Switch 2 game card. Though some third-party developers have opted to use Game-Key Cards as a way to cut costs and offer fans something tangible to put on their shelves, it is unclear what IOI's plans are for a physical release.

Despite the delay of the Switch 2 port outside 2026, 007 First Light continues to receive periodic updates to fix outstanding issues and offer players additional content to peruse. A late July update for 007 First Light, dubbed Behind Enemy Lines, was released as part of IOI's year-one plans for the game and added new TacSim weapons, missions, and unlockable outfits for players to browse through. Over 200 bugs and issues were addressed in the July update due to player feedback, including crashes specific to the Xbox Series S version.

Additionally, path tracing on the PC version of 007 First Light is now available. Users with a supported Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics card, such as the RTX 5070 or higher, can utilize new lighting options in-game. IO Interactive stated that enabling path tracing will also enable DLSS ray reconstruction by default.
